1.INTRODUCTION
1. INTRODUCTION
When a H.V. equipment is being operated, certain elements are energized, others may be in usual or occa-
sional motion and some parts may reach relatively high temperatures. As a consequence, its use may entail
electrical, mechanical and/or thermal hazard.
In order to provide an acceptable degree of protection for people and goods, those manufacturers belonging
to SERCOBE develop and manufacture their products according to the integrated safety principle, based
upon the following criteria:
- When this is technically and/or economically not possible, supplying adequate protections in the equipment
itself.
- Informing about the remaining risks to help the design of operating procedures for the prevention of possi-
ble risks and to help the training of the operating personnel when carrying out these tasks and the use of
appropriate staff safety measures.
As a consequence, only properly trained and/or supervised personnel (as per EN 50110) can work or be in
the proximity of the equipment described in this manual. They must be fully familiar with the instructions and
warnings contained in the present manual and also with those of a general order which are applicable and
in accordance with the legislation in force (RAT, Occupational Hazards Prevention Law and, as it may be
appropriate, the General Health and Safety Ordinance).
All the aforementioned has to be seriously taken into account as the correct and safe operation of this unit
depends not only on its design but also on circumstances beyond the control and responsibility of the manu-
facturer, as may be:
- Appropriate transport and handling on the way from the manufacturing plant to the installation site.
- Any intermediate storage made under conditions which do not alter and/or damage the characteristics of
the unit or any of its essential parts.
- Installation carried out according to the instructions given in this manual and the rules of sound practice.
- Handling and service operations strictly according to the instructions given in the manual, showing a clear
understanding of the operating and safety principles involved.
SF6 insulated, shielded, Medium Voltage switchgears, type CBGS, are metal-enclosed, prefabricated for
indoor use under normal working conditions and according to the applicable national and international stan-
dards.
They are supplied separately for self-supporting erection and can be fitted together to form single or double
busbar systems.
They have been designed for application in Power Supply Utilities, Transformer and Distribution Substations.
CBGS switchgears have been designed and manufactured in accordance with the latest technological inno-
vations and complying with the most demanding requirements as far as service safety, reliability and availa-
bility are concerned. The reliability and life of the switchgears depend on their correct application, as speci-
fied on the instructions, and proper maintenance. Hence the importance of observing the instructions
contained in the present manual.

METAL-ENCLOSURE
The cubicles of the busbar systems (A - B) and of the circuit-breaker (C) are made of stainless steel, are
hermetically shielded and pressure resistant and contain all high voltage live parts.
The outer enclosure is made of cold-rolled metal sheets, galvanized or painted with exposy powder to pre-
vent corrosion.
The supporting frames are of a high mechanical resistance. They are provided with level adjustment screws
and fixing systems to the structure which supports the switchgear.
PARTITIONING
FIGURE Nº. 2
Each of the busbars compartments (A or B) and the circuit-breaker compartment (C) are modular and inde-
pendent.
They are connected to each other by external screws and by the segregation tripolar bushings (1 and 4).
Each of them is completely gas-tight and pressure resistant with respect to the others.
In the same way, the busbar compartments and the disconnector compartments of each switchgear are
segregated in a gas-tight and pressure resistant way with respect to the busbar compartments of the adjoi-
ning switchgears by means of tripolar bushings.
Each compartment has a metal cover tightly screwed down (13), which allows inside access for components
replacement.
The busbars segregation system between switchgears (FIG. 2) makes it possible to replace the tripolar bus-
hings (1), the tightness gaskets (14) and other internal parts through the access cover (13) without moving
the switchgears.
The system allows, as well, the replacement of an intermediate switchgear without moving the adjoining
ones.
The busbar system (2) is composed of round-edged copper busbars for connection with silver-plated contact
areas screwed at their ends to the tripolar bushings (1) and sized up to 2500 A in 36 kV and 2000 A in 52 kV.
FIGURE Nº. 3
Depending on the function of the switchgear and the busbar they are fitted to, disconnectors can be:
Three position disconnectors (Single busbar incoming / outgoing and "A" double busbar switchgears):
- Connected to busbars
- Opened
- Ready to earth
The use of three position disconnectors in incoming / outgoing, single or double busbar switchgears, allows
the three normal operating positions:
- Line in service
- Insulated line
- Earthed line
For this last position, the incoming / outgoing line is earthed sequentially by means of the circuit-breaker.
As an option, for busbar disconnectors provided with electrical operating mechanisms, the incoming / out-
going line can be automatically earthed when operating the electrical closing pushbutton of the earthing
switch.
Manual operating mechanisms (11) of the disconnectors, as well as of the earthing switches are fitted on the
upper central panel (E2).
CIRCUIT-BREAKER
The metallic shielding of the SF6 circuit-breaker (5) is gas-tightly screwed on to its metal compartment (C).
Therefore, the operating mechanism is outside the SF6 tank and easily accessible for maintenance and revi-
sion purposes by removing its cover.
All the circuit-breakers are provided with alarm and low pressure blocking auxiliary contacts supplying con-
tinuous information about their availability.
FIGURE Nº. 4
SF6 CIRCUIT-BREAKER
Sockets for cable plug-in connections (6) are arranged at the lower part of the switchgear (D).
They can house up to 3 cables of 630 mm2 per phase in 36 kV and 2 cables of 400 mm2 per phase in 52 kV.
Voltage indicators are included.
As an option, round conductors with solid insulation type DURESCA, can be used.
CURRENT TRANSFORMERS
Several toroidal current transformers (7) can be fitted directly on the cable, on the wide space available on
the area of the switchgear (D).
They are placed outside the SF6 tank, free from power connections and accessible all the time.
In bus coupling or cross coupling switchgears, current transformers are conventional type, gas-tightly flanged
to their compartments, with the primary connections in SF6 and the secondary ones on the outside (Fig. 5).
FIGURE Nº. 5
VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS
Voltage transformers are inductive type. They can be flanged to their compartment in the same way as the
above mentioned current transformers of coupling switchgears, or can be assembled on the outside with
cable connection by means of plug-in connectors (Fig. 5 and 6).
Each circuit-breaker compartment and each section of busbars is provided with an SF6 refilling valve, con-
nected to a pressure gauge (E3, F1) with low pressure alarm contact for control, arranged at the front panel.
The pressure-gauge can be replaced without gas loss thanks to the automatic closing valve it is provided
with.
Each compartment includes a pressure relief device (12). An electric contact may be included to limit the
duration of a possible internal arc.
FRAME
The switchboard rests on a rigid supporting frame with four height-adjustable legs and the necessary fixing
elements to be fitted to the supporting frame of the switchgears.
For an easy handling and movement on site, it is provided with fixing points for rolling elements .
FIGURE Nº.6
FRONT PANEL
It comprises:
• Two low voltage compartments located on the upper and lower parts of the front panel (E1 and E4) for the
low voltage secondary equipment and the L.V. auxiliary connections of the auxiliary circuits (measuring,
operating mechanism, control and protection).
• Upper central panel including the manual and electrical operating mechanisms of the busbar disconnec-
tors, the interlocking systems (mechanical as well as electrical) and the synoptic scheme of the main cir-
cuit.
• Lower central panel comprising the circuit-breaker operating mechanism, the pressure indicator of the
cubicle and the voltage indicators in cables.
All the components of the front panel are accessible through doors or panels which can be easily disassem-
bled.
The rear part for cable access is protected by a cover which can be dismantled with tools and can have soc-
kets for voltage indicators tests available.
SWITCHGEARS EARTHING
The earthing facilities of the switchgears (8) are located on the front part of the cable compartment (D).
Running along the switchgears there is a Cu, 40 x 5 mm conductor, serving as galvanic connection of the who-
le enclosure. It is provided with screws which are properly distributed for the general earthing of the switchge-
ars (M12) as well as for the earthing of measuring transformers, power cables protective screens, etc.
INTERLOCKS
Depending on the position of the switchgears apparatus during their operation, single busbar system cubi-
cles will have the following electrical, mechanical and electromagnetic interlocks:
• The busbar disconnector can only be operated with the circuit-breaker in open position (electrical and
mechanical interlock).
• When the busbar disconnector is being operated, the circuit-breaker can not be closed (electrical inter-
lock).
• When the operating handle of the busbar disconnector is in inserted position, the circuit-breaker can not
be operated (electrical interlock).
• The operating handle of the busbar disconnector can only be removed or inserted once the operation has
been completed (mechanical interlock).
• When the busbar disconnector is earthed and the circuit-breaker in closed position, these can not be elec-
trically operated. Also, the disconnector that has been earthed can not be mechanically opened until the
circuit-breaker has been opened by means of its mechanical pushbutton, which is at the same time inter-
locked by means of a key lock.
• There are blocking devices in the disconnector and circuit-breaker operating mechanisms in order to pre-
vent maloperation.
• For the bus coupling unit, disconnectors are 2 position type (service -earth) and can not be electrically or
manually operated if the power circuit-breaker is connected. This interlocking works by means of electro-
magnetic devices.
Apart from the aforementioned interlocks, the following are also included:
• When the disconnector of one of the busbar systems of a switchgear is being operated, that of the other
busbar system can not be operated (electrical and mechanical interlock).
• The disconnector of a busbar system of a switchgear cannot be operated if that of the other busbar system
is in earthing or service position (electrical and mechanical interlock).
• When the disconnector of a busbar system of a feeder or transformer switchgear is in service, the discon-
nector of the second busbar system can be electrically set to service position whenever the cross coupling
is closed (electrical interlock).
• In cross and bus coupling switchgears, disconnectors are 2 position type (service - earth) instead of three
position ones.
• When the two busbar disconnectors of a switchgear are in service position and the cross coupling is in clo-
sed position, one of the disconnectors can be electrically opened.
• The circuit-breaker of the cross coupling switchgear can neither be electrically nor mechanically opened
when the two busbar disconnectors of the same feeder or transformer switchgear are in service position
(electrical and electromagnetic interlocks).

3.CIVIL ENGINEERING
3. CIVIL ENGINEERING
CBGS switchgears are shielded metal-enclosed, SF6 insulated, modular switchgears for indoor installation
under normal operating conditions.
They have front and rear access for the incoming of power cables as well as control cables on the lower part.
They can be erected on the floor with a lower trench that can be inspected or on a metal frame with a mini-
mum recommended height of 1000 mm to ensure the correct implementation of the power cables.
The following figures show the fixing drillings to be done in the floor for the first option and the dimensions of
the necessary fixing frames for the second option.
The general dimensions as well as the way the fixing frames are built, are standard solutions. For any ques-
tion or additional information, please contact MESA.
As a general rule, for the civil engineering of this type of switchgears, the following aspects shall be taken
into account:
- A minimum height of 1000 mm is recommended for the power cables lower gallery or trench.
- The "U" sections fixed into the floor, as well as the fixing frames, must be correctly lined up and level adjus-
ted so that there are no surface evenness deflections greater than 1 mm per metre.
- A minimum operating aisle of 700 mm on the rear and sides of the switchboard is necessary.
- The front operating aisle of the switchgears needs a minimum width of 2 m in order to manipulate the
extraction cart in case of a possible replacement of the circuit-breaker.
- The floor of the building and the fixing foundation of the switchgears must be suitable for a weight of 2000
kg per square metre.
- The room must be at least 3.5 metres high in order to assure the necessary conditions in case of a possi-
ble internal arc.
- The building must be provided with a ventilation system (natural or forced) suitable for the ventilation of the
room in case of a possible gas leak. Running water must also be available.
- The access door to bring switchgears in must have a minimum width of 2 metres and a minimum height of
3 metres.
- In the same way, for an easy unloading and transport of switchgears into the building, it is advisable to
have an unloading platform, 2 x 2 m, opposite the access door, on level with the floor of the building or 150
mm below it.

Switchgears will be unloaded using one of the following handling methods and always keeping the balance
of the weight.
If switchgears are unloaded by means of a fork-lift truck, it can be used as a transport means to the final
location of the switchgears after these have been unpacked.
If a travelling-crane is used, it will place the switchgears on the unloading platform once they have been
unpacked and their transport base has been removed.
In case the unloading platform is below the level of the switchgears assembly room, they will be unloaded
together with their transport base in such a way that the upper side of the base is on the same level as the
switchgears assembly room.
CBGS 1 switchgears will be hung by means of chains provided with four lock hooks with a loading capacity
of 2500 kg. They will be seized by the holes, existing for that purpose on the upper braces, checking weight
steadiness. Figure no. 33.

7. MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
5. INSTALLATION
5.1 PREVIOUS INFORMATION
Before the equipment is supplied, it is necessary that MESA´s personnel have the following information
available:
- Sketch of the erection room, layout of switchgears assembly and storage of accessories.
- Sketch of the route of the switchgears inside the building in which they are going to be mounted, indicating
position and dimensions of doors and operating aisles and floor number.
- Travelling crane
Depending on the available media, switchgears will be loaded following the most suitable order for assembly
purposes.
5.2 ERECTION
It is necessary to recall that assembly must be carried out only by authorized, qualified personnel who are
familiar with the instructions and warnings stated in this manual.
Before starting the installation of the equipment, check that all the switchgears and accessories listed in the
delivery note are available and in good condition and that appropriate tools are at hand.
Check that there are no gas leaks in the cubicles which have been filled in the factory. For this purpose, con-
sider the following procedure:
- If pressure in any of the cubicles is below rating, look for the location and cause of the leak.
- Try to repair it and then, refill with gas. If the leak has been important, new bags with desiccator will be pla-
ced inside the affected cubicle. In case the failure can not be repaired, the matter shall be referred to
MESA.
Only the cubicles of the following elements are supplied filled with gas: circuit-breaker, general busbar volta-
ge measuring, direct incoming and risers.
Apart from the above mentioned, also the busbar cubicle of the right switchgear of the transport unit is sup-
plied filled with gas, for CBGS 1 switchgears up to 36kV.
When checking pressure in cubicles, ambient air temperature and atmospheric pressure must be taken into
account, according to figure no. 38.
ASSEMBLY
The sequence of operations for the assembly of switchgears will be the following:
- SWITCHGEARS POSITIONING
- Place the switchgears on their corresponding supporting frame with the aid of transport wheels. Put
them in the right order; the first unit to be installed, on its final location and the rest of them keeping a
minimum distance of 300 mm between each other.
- If the number of switchgears to be installed is high, it is advisable to start with the central unit and then
situate the rest on both sides.
- Align the first unit longitudinally, laying out the corresponding master lines.
- Align the unit vertically using the level adjustment screws situated on the base of the switchgears.
When performing this operation, take into account the overall unevenness of the installation. Raise the
switchgear adequately to ensure that there are no problems when assembling the rest of them.
- SWITCHGEARS UNION
- Remove the covers of the busbar cubicles of the first unit that is going to be connected.
- Loosen and separate the bars of the general busbar systems of these cubicles, so that they do not inter-
fere with the switchgears joint.
- Remove the screws of the side panels, if there are any.
- Using dry, clean, not frayed cloths, wipe clean the walls of the busbar cubicles and the channel of the
gaskets of the busbar bushings.
- Check the correct state of the gaskets surface.
- Apply a fine coat of SILICONE PASTE P4, manufactured by WACKER QUIMICA IBERICA S.A. (sup-
plied with the switchgears) to the gaskets and fit them in the previously well cleaned channels of the bus-
bar bushings.
- Using the switchgears transport wheels, in lateral position, bring the unit that is going to be joined close
to the previous one so that they touch each other. Check that the gaskets remain in the corresponding
channel.
- With the level adjustment screws of the transport wheels, raise the unit until all the fastening bolts bet-
ween switchgears match.
- Join the busbar cubicles of both units mechanically by means of the appropriate screws, tightening to an
operating torque of 20 Nm.
- Screw together the side panels of the busbar cubicles to the corresponding busbar bushings after having
previously fitted in the load distribution flange. Tighten to15 Nm torque.
- Adjust all the level adjustment screws of the switchgear until it is perfectly settled on the supporting fra-
me and vertically aligned.
- Remove the transport wheels from the switchgear and join the base frames and low voltage compart-
ments of the switchgear with the corresponding screws.
- Connect the earthing general busbar through the corresponding earthing union bar.
- Fix the switchgears to their supporting frame using the supplied fixing clamps.
- Screw the busbars to the busbar bushings using screws and deflector flanges to a torque of 35 Nm.
- Check that the torque of all the screwed connections of the general busbars and that of the derivation
coincide with the above mentioned torque.
- Perform several operations with the busbar disconnector, checking that the penetrations in busbars as
well as in earth are correct and the distances in open position are the adequate ones.
- Check the electrical resistance of the screwed connections. The general busbar resistance of switchge-
ars must not differ from each other over 10%.
- Take the tools out of the busbar cubicle and clean the inside, particularly the insulating parts with a
vacuum-cleaner and appropriate cloths.
- Check that no loose remaining elements, tools, etc. are left inside.
- Using cloth or paper which do not fray, clean the surface of the gaskets of the closing cover.
- Lubricate the gaskets of the closing cover slightly with a thin coat of SILICONE PASTE P4, manufactured
by WACKER QUIMICA IBERICA S.A., and fit them.
- Put the closing covers on the busbar cubicles. Check that the inner side is free from dust, specially on the
contact area with the gasket, which must be completely polished and free from scratches.
- GAS FILLING
Once the switchgears have been joined and the busbar cubicles have been closed, fill the cubicles with SF6
gas according to the following indications:
- Connect one of the two valves each busbar cubicle is provided with, to a filling equipment, reference 3-
001-2-R001 DILO or similar.
- Let cubicle pressure fall down to 60 mbar for cubicles of 24 and 36 kV, and to 65 mbar for 52 kV.
- Fill the cubicle with SF6 gas up to its rated pressure, considering that such rated pressure is given for an
atmospheric condition of 1013 mbar at 20o C. It is essential to make the necessary corrections depen-
ding on the atmospheric pressure and ambient air temperature at the site, as per charts in figure No.38
and 39. If the pressure-gauge is not temperature-compensated, temperature corrections must be consi-
dered.

Once all the switchgears have been assembled and the busbar cubicles which require it have been filled with
gas, check for gas leakage on busbar systems. Examine all the points liable to cause a leakage, such as
gaskets, gas connections, tubes, pressure-gauges, etc…
Use a SF6 percentage measuring device type MG-00044, DILO or similar making, to measure the percen-
tage of air contained in each of the assembled busbar cubicles.
Remember that the amount of air per cubicle during filling operation must be about 5% of the total volume.
This test must not be carried out until 24 hours have passed after the last filling operation.
Use a dew-point meter, according to its operating instructions, to measure the dew point of each of the
assembled busbar cubicles. This measurement must have a maximum value of –10o C for atmospheric con-
ditions up to -5o C.
This test must not be carried out until 24 hours have passed after the last filling operation.
Each busbar section of each busbar system is fitted with a single pressure indicator located on the end side
panels of the switchboard. For this reason, all cubicles must be interconnected between each other and with
the corresponding pressure- gauge by means of the supplied interconnectors.
Once all the interconnectors have been fitted, check that the metering of the pressure-gauge is correct and
control this metering for a period of 2 weeks. Always take into account atmospheric pressure and ambient air
temperature variations.
5.3. CONNECTION
SWITCHGEARS EARTHING
Connect the earthing terminals of the switchgears placed on both ends to the general earthing system of the
installation.
Open the doors of the low voltage lower boxes (E4) and connect the control cables of the installation to the
appropriate terminals according to the corresponding electrical schemes. When the cable operation is finis-
hed, close the doors of the aforementioned boxes.
The cables screen will be earthed on the earthing connection busbar provided for this purpose under the
toroidal current transformers.
If any of the terminal sockets are not used from the beginning, cover them with appropriate insulating caps
for safety reasons. The supplied dust protection cap does not ensure safe protection against involuntary
touch.
Once the assembly, filling and gas checking operations are completed, test the dielectric strength of the unit
at 80% of the test values and at a frequency of 50HZ.
This test is only applicable to busbar systems, as the rest of the elements are factory-tested and there is no
need to manipulate them for assembly operations.
Warning:
In case voltage transformers were directly connected to busbars, they must be disconnected before carrying
out the dielectric test.
If voltage transformers were fed through disconnectors, they must be set to earth position before doing the
test.
In case of incoming / outgoing lines testing, disconnect the cables and fit appropriate safety caps. Before
doing so, check that there is no voltage in cables by means of the corresponding voltage indicators.
Then, secure them against static charges wrapping the ends together with 1.5 mm2 copper wire and
earthing them.
Check that the current transformers are connected according to the corresponding schemes. Check that the
secondary circuits of the voltage transformers are not short-circuited.
Using a relay test equipment, it is possible to check the correct functioning of the systems.
CABLE TESTING
Cable tests can be carried out without disconnecting cables from the unit. Proceed as follows:
- Earth the incoming / outgoing line (refer to the corresponding section in the operating instructions). First
check that there is no voltage in cables and no possibility of voltage returns.
- Disconnect the cable connected voltage transformers (in case there are any).
- Remove the insulating cap from the "T" screwed plug-in type connectors and connect the appropriate
cable test device.
- For straight connectors, remove the insulating cap from the corresponding auxiliary socket and connect
the test device to such socket.
- Remove test devices from cables and put the insulating caps on the connectors.
- Disconnect the earthing of the incoming / outgoing line, by opening the corresponding circuit-breaker and
the disconnector from earthing position.
Important: Follow these operating instructions accurately in order to avoid accidents by involuntary touching
of live parts. Also comply with the local and the manufacturer´s safety dispositions and regulations for high
voltage installations.
Switchgears must not be operated under high voltage if they are not sufficiently filled in with SF6 gas.
Pressure-gauges indicate the relative pressure of the gas inside the switchgear.
Pressure-gauges provided with auxiliary contacts give out an electrical signal when they reach the minimum
operating pressure. If gas pressure drops to unacceptable levels (indicator needle on the red area of the sca-
le), it is necessary to add SF6 gas, considering the curve which shows the relationship between gas pres-
sure and temperature (FIG. 36, pag.39).
In case of pressure dropping, this must be recorded depending on time. If pressure falls are important (seve-
ral tenths of bar/h.) immediately disconnect and insulate the compartment which has lost its gas-tightness.
If this is not possible, connect a bottle of gas, blowing in SF6 constantly and contact MESA Technical Servi-
ce.
The personnel in charge of the installation will be provided with the operating instructions before starting with
the operations.
Before the installation is finally delivered, the personnel must be familiar with all the details, specially with
those concerning handling, and also know the safety prescriptions of the manufacturer as well as those of
the country.
6.3. COMMISSIONING
Check if assembly has been done according to the instructions given in the preceding sections.
TEST OPERATIONS
Connect all the auxiliary and control voltages. Immediately after, the motor that drives the charging spring of
the power circuit-breaker must start.
Perform several test connections and disconnections with the disconnector (both disconnectors in case of
double busbar systems) and the power circuit-breaker. Check that all interlocking conditions are fulfilled and
that the position of elements is correctly indicated in the local and remote synoptical schemes.
Perform the same operations manually without abruptness or violence, checking the conditions of interloc-
king and signaling.
When the checking has finished, turn the whole apparatus to position "O".
In case of modifications during the assembly or commissioning, these must be stated on the corresponding
drawings.
6.4. OPERATION
Switchgears are supplied with the whole apparatus in position "0" and with the power circuit-breaker springs
uncharged.

In case some high voltage cables have not been connected, it is essential, for safety reasons, to cover the
corresponding sockets with a voltage-proof insulating cap.
- Check that there is no voltage in all the phases of the busbar system through the inductive voltage trans-
formers.
- Check that there is no voltage in all the phases of the incoming / outgoing line through the capacitive vol-
tage indicators on the front panel.

POWER CIRCUIT-BREAKER
- Locally, with the "O" "I" electrical pushbuttons situated on the circuit-breaker panel (FIG.39, pos.8), or from
remote, by electrical signals emission.
- It is also possible to open it locally with the "O" mechanical pushbutton of the circuit-breaker (FIG.39,
pos.11). This will be used in the event of a failure of control voltage, failure of the tripping coil or in order to
de-earth the line.
The operating mechanism of the circuit-breaker is motorized and has a spring system that stores energy. It
charges the connection closing spring automatically after each connection operation as soon as the auxi-
liary voltage is applied to it.
The energy required for the switching sequence C – O – C (auto-reclosing) is stored in the closing spring 15
seconds after closing the circuit-breaker.
When the auxiliary voltage fails or the motor breaks down, the closing spring can be manually charged with
the hand crank supplied with the unit.
The hand crank is fitted in the charging mechanism by means of a freewheel. There is no risk of injury for the
operator if the motor auxiliary voltage is re-established when the spring is being charged with the hand
crank.
- CONNECTION
Before connecting the circuit-breaker, remove the operating handle of the manual operating mechanism of
the switchgear disconnectors.
Push the "I" electrical pushbutton (FIG. 39, pos.8) or from remote, operate the voltage of the closing relea-
se. It is not possible to close the circuit-breaker electrically without control voltage. Then, the "I" closed posi-
tion indication in the synoptical scheme appears on the inspection window (FIG. 39, pos.6), disappearing the
indication of spring charged. Immediately, the motor operated mechanism charges automatically the stored-
energy spring.
- DISCONNECTION
Operate the "O" electrical pushbutton (FIG. 39, pos.8) or from remote, operate the electrical signal of the
tripping coil. Then, the "O", open indication appears on the inspection window (FIG. 39, pos.6).
If the circuit-breaker has been used to earth the circuit, the electrical opening signals are cancelled.
BUSBAR DISCONNECTOR
Depending on the function of the switchgear and the general busbar they are arranged at, busbar discon-
nectors can be:
- Connected to busbars
- Opened
- Ready to earth
- Connected to busbars
- Opened
- Connected to busbars
- Earthed
Turn the operating handle 360º to the limit in the indicated direction for the operation you wish to perform.
The direction of the movement can be changed over at any moment regardless of whether this movement
has been completed or not. This does not apply to cross or bus coupling switchgears.
The busbar disconnector can only be moved from "connected to busbars" position to "earthed" position in
two operations:
The operating handle must be inserted and turned 360º again for each operation.
The operation can be performed by means of pushbuttons, from remote or locally, (FIG. 39, pos.4 and 5),
carrying out the following operation sequence:
The motor is disconnected when a defined operating position has been completed.
The busbar disconnector can only be operated in blank position, that is, when the circuit-breaker is in "O",
open position.
For double busbars, electrical operations can be performed with the "I" position, provided the bars are cou-
pled. There is an interlocking system to prevent the access of the hand crank to the shaft of the disconnec-
tor when the circuit-breaker is in "I", closed position, for manual operation. There is also an electrical inter-
locking system for motor operation.

7. MAINTENANCE MANUAL
CBGS switchgears have been designed according to the following definition: metal-enclosed apparatus
for application in Power supply Utilities, Transformer and Distribution Substations. Access to installed
switchgears is restricted to authorized and qualified personnel due to potential danger of electrical power
manipulation, as described in Annex AA of EN 60298.
SAFETY MEASURES
SF6 SUPERVISION
This must be done for a period of one month from the date of commissioning.
In case of pressure dropping, this must be recorded according to time. If pressure falls are important
(several tenths of bar/h.) immediately disconnect and insulate the compartment which has lost its gas-
tightness. If this is not possible, connect a bottle of gas, blowing in SF6 constantly and contact MESA
Technical Service.
INSPECTION PROGRAMME
SF6 insulated switchgears, CBGS type, are practically maintenance free. Those parts which are subject
to wear and ageing need maintenance.
SUPERVISION OF CIRCUIT-BREAKERS
