CGM system - Modular Cubicles CGM System

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
CGM cubicles form a system of small size modular equipment Connection between modules is provided by a simple, reliable
for Medium Voltage, each module having a specific function. patented system, in use in thousands of installations since 1993,
Every function has its own metal enclosure, which contains a which enables different configurations to be set up for
stainless steel tank filled with SF6 gas, in which the switching Transformer Substations with one or several transformers,
devices and busbar are kept. isolation, metering, etc. Connection of feeders and cables to
the transformer is also fast and safe.
The manufacturing process and the tests performed on every
cubicle manufactured guarantee that it will work under a given
range of temperature and pressure conditions. Full insulation
in SF6 makes the equipment pollution resistant, and able to
withstand even the flooding of the MV/LV substation. This
reduces maintenance requirements and helps to minimize
operating costs. FIELD OF APPLICATION

a 3-position disconnector in series. It is fitted with
a multi-curve overcurrent relay RPGM enabling
the circuit breaker to be used for general or
transformer protection.

CMIP (Busbar switch cubicle) It contains a switch-disconnector that allows the

main bus of the MV/LV substation to be split in
two parts, even under load (1). It optionally can be
fitted with an earthing switch at any side of the
busbar.

CMM (Metering cubicle) This cubicle is designed to contain the V.T.’s and
C.T.’s inside an enclosure compatible with other
CGM functions. Optionally, it is possible to install
energy counters.

CMR (cable rise cubicle) It is a metal enclosure protecting cables as they

rise towards the bushings in the upper part to
make a direct connection to the busbar. Optionally,
voltage detectors can be included.

DESIGNATION

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

CIRCUIT BREAKER
The vacuum circuit breaker consists of 3 vacuum poles. There
are two contacts at each pole, the fixed contact is placed near
the back of the cubicle; and the moving one, oriented towards
the front of the cubicle, both of which are operated by the circuit
breaker mechanism.

The disconnector in the cubicle enables tests to be made on the

circuit breaker.

Operating sequences:
O - 3 min - CO - 3 min - CO
O - 0.3 s - CO - 3 min - CO
O - 0.3 s - CO - 15 s - CO

DRIVING MECHANISM
Two groups of driving mechanisms are provided depending on
the switching device.

Mechanisms for the circuit breaker:

RAV: Spring loading is simultaneous for the double operation

of closing and opening. Loading is manual by a lever.
RAMV: Similar to RAV, but springs are loaded automatically
by a motor ( Motorization, Remote Control & Automation).

Mechanisms for the 3-position switch:

B: Each operation (closing, opening or earthing) must be

made directly by the operator using a lever.
BR: Similar to B, but after the switch closes, the springs must
be loaded to open it. This can be done by a push-button,
using the opening coil, by fuses or by triggering the RPTA
relay.
BM: As well as all the functions of B, all operations can be
Vacuum circuit breaker cubicle CMP-V performed remotely by a geared motor ( Motorization,

AR: Similar to BR, but when the switch closes, the springs
are already loaded to open it.

FUSES
In CMP-F cubicles the fuses are mounted on sliding carriages
which are inserted in fuse holder tubes made of insulating resin.

The three tubes are placed inside the gas tank being perfectly
sealed off from the gas. When they are closed they are also
sealed off from the outside, which ensures that they are not
affected by external pollution even in case of a flooding. This
is achieved by a quick-locking device with a built-in sealing
flexible membrane.

The membrane performs another important task: to activate the

tripping mechanism of the switch, that can be originated by:

the action of the striker pin of a fuse when it blows; or

overpressure inside the fuse holder when the fuse overheats.

CONNECTION

CONNECTION
BETWEEN CUBICLES
Cubicles are connected electrically by ORMALINK (connecting To permit maximum flexibility of layout, the following options
set) patented by Ormazabal since 1992. This unit enables the are available for outlets on the sides of busbars:

which, installed between the female bushings (busbar outlets)
on the sides of the cubicles to be linked, provide continuity to
the busbar and seal off the junction, controlling the electric field
by means of semiconductive layers.

The ORMALINK, with its special design and composition, prevents

partial discharges and maintains the insulation characteristics,
and the rated and short circuit currents, that the cubicles have
individually.

STANDARD BUSHINGS: If the outlet is for cables or for a

link with a cubicle not belonging to the CGM or CGC systems.

ORMALINK

After fitting the three adaptors on the three phases of the busbar,
it is only necessary to connect the earth and secure the mechanical
link between the cubicles with screws.

OPERATING SAFETY F G
CGM cubicles offer a degree of protection IP 33(1) (except, of
course, in the area where the cables pass through(2)), which
means that there can be no direct accidental contact with live
parts. The metal enclosure has an IK 08 degree of protection
against impact, meanwhile the pressure gauge inspection
window has en IK 06 degree.

The gas tightness of the tank is guaranteed for its expected

service lifetime. As an option a pressure gauge can be supplied
which is visible from outside so that the SF6 pressure inside the
tank can be checked.

The enclosure of these cubicles is designed to minimize any

injury to people or damage to other items in the MV/LV substation
in case of an internal fault leading to an arc.

Likewise, the system of interlocks is designed to permit access

to cables only when they are earthed, and to prevent workers
to carry out wrong operations.

As an option safety locks can be fitted, allowing for various

interlocking possibilities, depending on the type of cubicle
involved.

(1) Optionally higher protection degrees can be supplied.

TRANSFORMER PROTECTION/
GENERAL PROTECTION
Both, fused cubicle CMP-F with RPTA and the circuit breaker
cubicle CMP-V with RPGM, can be used as transformer protection
or general protection in private transformer substations. The
a b first solution is only limited by the power of the transformer.

The CMP-V cubicle in combination with RPGM can be also used

for overhead or underground lines protection, motors or cos
applications.

The table below shows the recommended rated currents for low-
loss type fuses in CMP-F cubicles.

For protection against overcurrents or faults to earth the cubicle Selection of fuses for CGM-CMP-F cubicles
can incorporate as an option a self-powered RPTA system
( Protective Relays - RPTA).

Protection against transformer overheating can also be provided,

HANDLING & INSTALLATION

Handling CGM cubicles may be carried out by using rollers

under the cubicle or by slings attached to the lifting points on
the top.

After electrically connecting the busbars of the cubicles via the

connecting set, mechanical junction must be carried out by
screwing adjacent cubicles together at the points provided for
this purpose. Finally, anchor the cells to the floor of the transformer
substation by fitting bolts at the four points provided on the
base of each cubicle. This will prevent cubicles from moving or
vibrating as a result of short circuits, flooding of the station, etc.

BOLTS

When the floor of the Transformer Substation is not flat, it is

recommended to install the cubicles over U sections, specially
when floading risk exists.

Fuse Holders 12/24 KV

Before CMP-F cubicles are put into service the fuses must be
inserted, and it must be checked that the tripping mechanism
(optional) of the fuse compartments is reset.

DESCRIPTION
Three distinct parts constitute the RPTA:

Sensors: There is a toroidal sensor around the corresponding

cable of each phase, whose task is not only to measure the
actual current circulating through each phase, but also to power
the relay. If protection against earth faults is required a fourth
toroidal sensor must be installed surrounding all three phases.

Actuator: It is a bi-stable tripping device which, activated by

a low-energy voltage pulse, triggers the opening of the switch.

Analog relay: This low-consumption module can be broken

down into three parts:
A B 1- Display module: Signal lamps (A) correspond to different
causes of eventual switch opening, and to indicate that
C auxiliary power is on. The Display (B) and Reset (C) keys
activate the signal lamp corresponding to the actual cause,
D and turn off this signal.

2- Setting of the overcurrent protec-tion: The actual value is

F 3- Setting of the faults to earth protection: Io dial (F) adjusts

the threshold value of the current, and dial T (G) adjust the
operating time.
