VPIS-V2 : Context (reason for a new design)
● Reminder about current version

● VPIS has been designed in 2000

● Important installed customer based (1 Million)

● As a consequence a very low level of ppm is required before end of life

● Re-industrialisation (After first detected failures)

● 2003: Varnishing, New component, New supplier
● 2005-2007: Manufacturing Robustness.

● These re-industrialisation have resulted in a better ppm level however no higher

garanty of better life duration.

● DECISION TO DESIGN A NEW VERSION TO MATCH ALL VPIS

WEAKNESSES

Schneider Electric - Power Business training - Discover SM6-24 12/2008 72

VPIS-V2 : Customers require significant
improvements
● Visibility improvement
● Visibility of current version is sometimes too weak
● Leds technology is now used for a better visibility

● Life duration and IP improvement

● Life duration of current VPIS is limited by the neon life duration
● Leds technology is now used for long life duration (over 15 years)

● Phase comparison ergonomy and standard conformity

● Improvement of the phase comparator plugging into VPIS
● Development of a phase comparator

Schneider Electric - Power Business training - Discover SM6-24 12/2008 73

VPIS-V2: Industrial requirements
● Compatibility
● VPIS-V2 is compatible with all existing wirings and connectors
● VPIS-V2 is compatible with surge protected or not protected wirings
● VPIS-V2 has the same size as current version

● Uncompatibility
● VPIS-V2 needs a specific phase comparator (2 versions)
● The new Phase comparator cannot compare two different versions of VPIS
(It is recommended to avoid old and new version of VPIS in the same substation)
● All the references are changed

● Robustness
● IP protection improvement (IP67), including the connector

Schneider Electric - Power Business training - Discover SM6-24 12/2008 74

VPIS-V2: Industrial requirements
● Wiring surge protection
● The surge protection is now integrated into the VPIS-V2 body
● The current separate wiring surge protection is no more needed
● Conformity with the new standard IEC 61958 is assumed

● Range optimisation
● Lot of troubles with the current version comes from wrong condition of use
Capacitor sensors values are uncertain (from ± 10% to ± 30%) and temperature dependant
On 60Hz network the threshold are different (20%)
VPIS is defined for service voltage and switchgears are sold with rated voltage.

● New VPIS-V2 references take into account real

voltage/capacitor/frequency values

Schneider Electric - Power Business training - Discover SM6-24 12/2008 75

VPIS-V2 solution
9 versions depending on thresholds
- Main electronics
- LED indication
- Contacts for phase comparator

This is the part to be changed for maintenance

Should be mounted on cable

- Cable gland
- IP 67 protection part

This part remains during maintenance

- Surge arrester
- Connection to the capacitor bundle
- Optional Voltage output

Schneider Electric - Power Business training - Discover SM6-24 12/2008 76

VPIS-V2: a range for all MV switchgears

● New references are created

● The number of references has increased
● The voltage range for each version will be defined per MV equipment
(50Hz/60Hz with the same version)
● For each version a reference with voltage signal output is created (for instance for ATS
function)

● Distribution through CDI

Schneider Electric - Power Business training - Discover SM6-24 12/2008 77

What is an LPCT?
• A magnetic sensor with integrated shunt
• It provides a voltage output (Vs) which represents the primary current
• A new technology launched in 2002
• It is compliant with international standard IEC 60044-8.

LPCT’s range of use
LPCT measuring and protection function guaranteeing the accuracy up to the short-time current.
Following the range of use of LPCT CLP1 type:
- from 5A up to 1250A respecting the error limits imposed by the accuracy class 0,5
- from 1250A up to 50kA respecting the error limits imposed by the accuracy class 5P

Schneider Electric - Power Business training - Discover SM6-24 12/2008 125

LPCT’s range of use
LPCT and SEPAM relay is an effective protection system from 5A to 1250A

A) About LPCT
The LPCT accuracy is defined by the accuracy class 0,5 according to IEC standard 60044-8.
The 100A is the LPCT rated primary current .
However, it is possible to use LPCT in an electrical network with a current higher or lower than 100A.

B) About Sepam:
When connected on LPCT's, it is possible to set the Sepam rated phase current, at a value different
from 100A. Sepam rated phase current is used by the relay to calibrate its electronic circuit, its
metering and protections functions, and may be different from the LPCT rated primary current.
However, in all cases, the above mentioned LPCT accuracy will not change.

C) Example
When Sepam is connected on LPCT's, if its rated phase current is set at 25A:
- sepam metering range = 2,5A to 37,5A
- ansi 50/51 definite time tripping threshold range = 2,5A to 600A
- ansi 50/51 IDMT time tripping threshold range = 2,5A to 60A
In this particular case, note that between 2,5A and 5A, the accuracy is not defined.
