Columbus Symphony Orchestra Offers Discount College Passes as the 2018-19

Season Kicks Off

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Local college students are now able to purchase a $25 College
Club Membership Card to attend the recently debuted Columbus Symphony Orchestra
(CSO) Masterworks performances.

By purchasing a card, students become College Club Members. Members can

purchase up to four additional student tickets at $8 a piece for each Masterworks
performance. They’re also able to attend any post-concert events and receive emails
containing updates and special opportunities. The CSO hopes offering this discount will
encourage young adults to be more involved in the arts.

“With 12 concerts in the Masterworks series, you can hear the world’s most beautiful
music for a little over $2 per concert,” says Casey Bauchmoyer, student at The Ohio
State University and double bassist in the Buckeye Philharmonic Orchestra. “You can’t
beat that deal to experience such stunning art.”

Students can purchase the card by visiting the Columbus Association for the Performing
Arts (CAPA) Ticket Center at the Ohio Theatre (39 E. State St.). Attendants will ask for
a valid student ID and will send the college pass to the buyer through the mail.

Upon arriving at a Masterworks concert, members present their Membership Cards at

the CAPA Ticket Center. From there, ticket center employees will assign seats and
tickets.

Students’ first opportunity to use their college passes was for the Columbus Symphony
Orchestra’s 2018-19 Season debut. The Opening Night performance, “In Full Splendor,”
was held Sept. 21st with a second performance Sept. 22nd.

“It is my great pleasure to present to you our 2018-19 Masterworks season,” says
Rossen Milanov, conductor of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. “We would like to
think of our concerts as a collection of irresistibly unique experiences that will provide a
wide array of choices for you to consider. This year’s primary focus will be on the
Columbus Symphony itself—its wonderful musicians and their virtuosity!”

To open the season, Milanov chose to showcase popular pieces that many people
would recognize. One such piece was the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, written by Paul Dukas,
from the popular film, Fantasia. The orchestra hopes to engage audiences in the
concerts and programs by reminding them of something familiar and close to home.

Milanov elaborates saying, “‘Fantasia’ was actually the introduction to classical music to
a whole generation of Americans who probably did not really have a symphony
orchestra, full-fledged, in their hometown.”
By incorporating familiar pieces into their programs and offering the College Club
Membership Card, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra hopes to further engage the
community, especially young adults, in the arts.

“I often go to orchestra concerts with my friends who play in an orchestra themselves

and are more familiar with many of the pieces,” says Ohio State student Maya
Tamaskar. “It was really neat to experience a concert where I recognized all the pieces.
I definitely found it more exciting and engaging.”

Even if students missed the first performance, there is still time to make use of a
Membership Card. There are 11 more Masterworks performances, the next of which will
be the “Leonard Bernstein Centennial Celebration” held Friday Oct. 12th and Saturday
Oct. 13th at 8:00 p.m. Featured pieces include “Three Dance Episodes” from On the
Town, “West Side Story: Suite for Violin and Orchestra,” and movements from the
musical “Candide.”

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra welcomes and appreciates its supporters and
patrons in anticipation for its upcoming events. Milonov expresses this saying, “Music is
the universal language that unites people, bridges social divisions, inspires us to be the
best we can be, and elevates our aspirations. The Columbus Symphony and I are
fortunate to have the privilege of being your orchestra and source of inspiration…”
