First Quarter
Lesson 1: The Music of Cordillera

Objectives
The learner will be able to:
✓ Listen to songs from Luzon (highlands and lowlands)
✓ Correlates Philippine music from Luzon (Highlands and Lowlands) to the lives of the
people
✓ Analyzes examples of Philippine music from Luzon and describes how the musical
elements are used
✓ Explain the distinguishing characteristics of representative Philippine music from
Luzon in relation to history and culture of the area.

● The Lesson is an overview of the music of the Cordillera or the Highlands of Luzon,
Where several ethno linguistic groups in the mountains of the Cordillera live.
Through the lesson one will discover how the people of Cordillera express their
feelings towards each other and environment, their history, and their supernatural
beliefs through the medium of the voice and / or musical instruments. A group
performance inspired by examples of Cordillera music will culminate the educational
experience

● The music of the Highlands of Luzon ( Cordillera) helps us discover the way of life
of the Cordillera people through themes about nature, family life, works in the field
as well as the spiritual matters. In addition to songs and chanted poetry. Cordillera
music is distinctively made up of two sound characteristics of instruments based on
their respective materials- the first, made of bamboo ( flutes, percussion
instruments) and the second made of metal (gongs) These traditions are on their
way to extinction due to the modernization of the way of life among the youth of the
cordillera region, less and less of the generation are taught, learning the traditional
music of their forefathers.

✓ Filipinos have been singing competitions worldwide. That should not be a surprise,
as Filipinos are known to be musically inclined. Music has always been part of our
culture and way of life.
✓ There are songs for work, worship, and festivals that connect to our culture.
✓ Secular Song- is a type of song that is non-religious in nature. This kind of song is
primarily for entertainment, but it can also be used as a work song or a song for a
particular celebration.

✓ Folk Song an example of a Luzon lowland folk song is “Magtanim Ay Di Biro”. This
popular folk song describes the tedious task of rice planting. The song also
expresses the hope of a bright future if you are prepared for the bright future. If you
are prepared for the challenges ahead when you listen to the song, you can hear a
rhythmic beat that is synchronized to the way rice seedlings are planted.

✓ Manang Biday this is a courtship song wherein Biday, the name of the lady is
requested to open the window to see and hear the good intentions of the man
courting her.

HARANA

✓ or serenading is a traditional way of courtship. When doing a harana. The man


usually sings with a guitar to the woman he is courting. He performs outside the
woman’s house in front of her family. If the man is not talented enough to sing, he
may hire someone who can perform the love song. Nowadays, you seldom see
courtship done this way.

STAGES OF HARANA

● Panawagan- The man calls out to the woman through a song.


● Pagtatapat- The man proposes and sings a song that expresses his love to the
woman.
● Pananagutan- after the man sings the woman also expresses her response
through a song.
● Pamamalam- After being received by the woman, the man leaves her with a song.

● Salidummay- a group of folk song from Northern Luzon,

Balitaw
✓ Tagalog Balitaw is another type of folk song written in ¾ time signature. This folk
song expresses love verses for both the man and the woman. Its music is used for
the balitaw dance, which demonstrates in movement the love verses being sung

✓ Kumintang is a song and dance style from the 19 th century, Some sources say that
the term kumintang is the former name of Batangas, where the style of music
originated from, other accounts considered the kumintang as a war song.

✓ It is also performed by a man and a woman who exchanged musical phrases that
concern love and courtship. While the exchange of music is going on, dancers and
members of the audience would pass around a glass of lambanog, a Filipino native
wine made of coconut sap.
✓ Kundiman- follows a form and tonality that is distinct from the common love song.
This folk song may have binary or a ternary form.

✓ The popular kundiman song “Bayan ko”


✓ Is a patriotic song frequently sung during the 1986 EDSA Revolution. This piece
was taken from the zarzuela titled “Walang Sugat”

Ang Kundiman ng Himagsikan,”which is considered as the kundiman of katipuneros.

➢ If you read the lyric of the song, the first letter of each line of the lyric would form the
name “Jocelynang Baliuag.” Thus historians consider the kundiman as having
political undertones, Wherein the woman of affection refer to the motherland
