MASS BALANCES with REACTIONS

1. Mole/ mass conversions

How many of the following are found in 15.0 kmol of benzene (C 6H6 MW = 78 g/mol)?

a) kg C 6H6
b) mol C6H6
c) lbmole C 6H6
d) mol C
e) mol H
f) gC
g) gH
h) molecules C 6H6

2. Reaction definitions
Consider the reaction A + 2B →C.

Suppose 100 mol of A and 300 mol of B are fed to a batch reactor. The final product contains
10 mol of A. Calculate:
a) the limiting reactant
b) % excess of the other reactant
c) Fractional conversion of A
d) Extent of the reaction

3. Dehyrogenation of Ethane
100 kmol/min of ethane (C H ) enters a reactor. The products are 40 kmol/min hydrogen
2 6
(H ), ethylene (C H ) and some unreacted ethane. Consider reaction: C H →C H + H
2 2 4 2 6 2 4 2

a) Draw a fully-labelled flowchart for the reactor

b) Perform a DOF analysis around the system
c) Determine the flowrates of ethylene and ethane leaving the reactor.

Use the full systematic mass balance approach

4. Oxidation of Ethylene
The oxidation of ethylene to produce ethylene oxide proceeds according to the equation

2C 2H4 + O2 →2C 2H4O

The feed to a reactor contains 100 kmol/h C 2H4 and 100 kmol/h O 2.
a) which reactant is limiting?
b) what is the percentage excess of the other reactant?
c) if the reaction proceeds to completion, how much of the excess reactant will be left;
how much C 2H4O will be formed; and what is the rate of reaction?
d) if the reaction proceeds to a point where the fractional conversion of the limiting
reactant is 50%, how much of each reactant and product is present at the end, and
what is the rate of reaction?
e) if the reaction proceeds to a point where 60 kmol of O 2 is left, what is the fractional
conversion of C 2H4? The fractional conversion of O 2? The rate of reaction?
