Throughout the history of Western Art, what I find most interesting is the Romanticism (1780-

1850). I find this period the most interesting for some unique reasons. First, Romanticism is
undefinable by nature. What I mean by this is that the movements in this era are fuelled by
personal emotions, individual uniqueness and even self-expression. Basically, artists in this era
have no distinct style but they conveyed the same messages in their works which defined them
as Romantic. As what the great Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich described Romanticism
as “the artist’s feeling is his law”. Second, artworks in the Romantic period have a variety of
subject matter including landscapes, religion, revolution and peaceful beauty. I also admire how
they rejected the neoclassical beliefs. Their prioritization of emotion over thought, spiritualism
over science, nature over industrialization, rusticity over wealth, and freedom over authority are
what got me to find this era most interesting. Third reason is that Romanticism used art as
platform to fight for freedom and equality and promote justice for every individual. Individual
imagination and intuition have been a great help for Romanticism artists in their artworks in the
continued search for individual rights and liberty. The painters in this era used their artworks
depicting the current events and atrocities to shed light on injustices which is also another
theme commonly used in this era. An example of this is the oil painting made by Eugène
Delacroix entitled “Liberty Leading the People” which commemorates the July Revolution in
Paris that dethroned Charles X, the restored Bourbon king.

Another reason is that, Romantic paintings often featured natural disasters. If we look at the
paintings from this era, we will see that the common theme they used was the awe and fear of
nature and rejects the scientific arrogance of truly understanding nature.
Overall, Romanticism greatly symbolizes the natural world and human goodness. Its philosophy
of warm emotion over cold thought, made it the “art with a heart”. And for me, if you make an
“art with a heart”, you will be able to convey the message more clearly in your artwork and it
would allow the audience to know you through your artwork. I also believe that if you let your
heart out in your artwork it would be more authentic as it reflects what you truly felt inside.
