Inverse Variation
Inverse variation happens whenever the situation produces two quantities whose product
is a nonzero constant. It is described as one quantity increases, the other quantity decreases
or as one quantity decreases, the other quantity increases . The statement “y varies
k
inversely as x” or “y is inversely proportional to x” may be written as y= or equivalently, xy =
x
k where k is the constant of variation.

Example 1: Write in symbols: “m varies inversely as s” with k as the constant of

variation.
k
Solution: Using the given variables, the corresponding equation will bem=
s
Example 2: If y varies inversely as x; and y is equal to 7 when x is equal to 3, find the
variation constant and the equation of the variation.
k
Solution: y= translate “y varies inversely as x” into an equation
x
k
7= substitute the given values in the equation
3
(7)(3)=k apply cross product property to solve for k
21= k Therefore, the constant of variation is 21

Example 3: If m varies inversely as d and m is 9 when d is 6, what is the value of m when d is 3?

Solution: Step 1: solve for the constant of variation
k
m= translate “m varies inversely as d” into an equation
d
k
9= substitute the given values in the equation
6
(9)(6)=k apply cross product property to solve for k
54= k Therefore, the constant of variation is 54
Step 2: solve for the value of m. (what is the value of m when d is 3?)
k
m= translate “m varies inversely as d” into an equation
d
54
m= substitute the value of k(constant of variation) and d.
3
m=18 Therefore,the value of m is equal to 18.
ACTIVITY 1: LET’S PRACTICE!
Directions: Translate the following inverse variation statements into equations.
1. e varies inversely as d
2. m varies inversely as n
3. g varies inversely as the t
4. At a given constant temperature, the pressure (p) is inversely proportional as
to its volume (v).
5. The force of attraction (f) between two opposite electrical charges is inversely
proportional as distance (d) between them.

ACTIVITY 2: KEEP PRACTICING!

Directions: Determine the constant of variation of the following statements:
1. If y varies inversely as x, then y is 9 when x is 2.
2. If C varies inversely as D, then C is 8 when D is 5.
3. If S varies inversely as T, then S is 3 when T is 15.
4. If v is inversely proportional to w, then w is 1/2 when v is 14.
5. If r is inversely proportional to b, then r is 5 when b is 2/¿7

ACTIVITY 3: TEST YOURSELF!

Write each of the following statements into inverse variation equation and then solve for
the unknown:
1. If a varies inversely as b and a is 10 when b is 5, find a when b is 20.

2. If y is inversely proportional to x and y is 8 when x is 3, find x when y is 6.

3. Aki and Jiya are playing on a seesaw. Aki, who weighs 25

kilograms sits 3 meters away from the fulcrum. If Jiya’s weight is
20 kilograms, how far away must she sit from the fulcrum to
balance seesaw?

4. The number of days required to finish the job varies inversely with
the number of workers doing the job. If 10 workers can complete
the job in 6 days, how many workers are needed to finish the job in
4 days?
