Session: _________ Content: Inverse Variation
DISCUSSION:
Inverse Variation is very similar to direct but in an inverse relationship, as one value goes
up, the other goes down . There is not necessarily a constant rate.
While direct variation describes a linear relationship between two variables, inverse
variation describes another kind of relationship.
For two quantities with inverse variation, as one quantity increases, the other quantity
decreases.
That is, y varies inversely as x if there is some nonzero constant k such that, xy=k or
y=kx where x≠0,y≠0.
For example, when you travel to a particular location, as your speed increases, the time it
takes to arrive at that location decreases. When you decrease your speed, the time it takes
to arrive at that location increases. So, the quantities are inversely proportional.
SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES
Note: The activities included here will be used only when needed.
2.) The density d of air varies inversely as the volume v of water in the atmosphere.
5.) The mass m of an object varies inversely as the acceleration due to gravity g.
