MULTICULTURAL LESSON ACTIVITY

(6-8 grade Science class)

I. Lesson Objectives:

A. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation for scientists and their
studies.
B. Students will gain an understanding of the different cultures where scientific
discoveries have come from.

II. Lesson Materials:

Paper
Pencils
Index cards
Chromebooks
Poster Board
Markers/Crayons/Colored Pencils

III. Instruction/Learning Process:

A. Do First - Students will list all the great inventions of their time. They will try to
come up with things alone at first, and then the teacher will let them do some
quiet sharing.

B. Mini - Lesson - Teacher will ask for some examples of ideas they came up with.
Discussion. Teacher will then share some examples of different ideas of
inventions they might not have thought of. The teacher will then share some
names of inventors and scientists and see if the students recognize the names;
Wangari Muta Maathai from Africa (who led the Greenbelt movement),
Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie from Indonesia (who is an aerospace engineering
scientist), Emilio Herrera Linares who was from Portugal (designed the modern
space suit). After giving a few names a slide show will be presented discussing
the many contributions that people from all over the world have made to science.

C. Guided Practice - Students will be split up into groups of approximately 4-6

students and be assigned a country. They will need to discover a scientist/inventor
from that country and how that person contributed to the modern age. They will
have 15-20 minutes to do their research using the Chromebook and be able to
share the information with the class. Just a short summary of the person, where
they are/were from and what their contribution was.
D. Independent Practice - After hearing about many different people from the
groups’ presentations, each individual will decide one scientist to do a research
project on. The students will need to do a full research report on the scientist
including a 2-page paper, and a poster to present to the class. They will have one
week to complete the assignment. All will benefit from hearing about the different
inventors and scientists.

E. Exit Slip - Each student will turn in the name of the person they are going to study
and do their research paper on by the end of the day.
