I. Lesson Objectives:
A. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation for scientists and their
studies.
B. Students will gain an understanding of the different cultures where scientific
discoveries have come from.

A. Do First - Students will list all the great inventions of their time. They will try to
come up with things alone at first, and then the teacher will let them do some
quiet sharing.
B. Mini - Lesson - Teacher will ask for some examples of ideas they came up with.
Discussion. Teacher will then share some examples of different ideas of
inventions they might not have thought of. The teacher will then share some
names of inventors and scientists and see if the students recognize the names;
Wangari Muta Maathai from Africa (who led the Greenbelt movement),
Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie from Indonesia (who is an aerospace engineering
scientist), Emilio Herrera Linares who was from Portugal (designed the modern
space suit). After giving a few names a slide show will be presented discussing
the many contributions that people from all over the world have made to science.
E. Exit Slip - Each student will turn in the name of the person they are going to study
and do their research paper on by the end of the day.
