Bevel Protractor
THEORY
Bevel Protractor:
The bevel protractor is the graduated round protractor with one pivoted arm, utilized for the
purpose of separating edges. The bevel protractor consists of a beam, a graduated dial and a
blade which is connected to a swivel plate (with Vernier scale) by thumb nut and clamp. When
the edges of the beam and blade are parallel, a small mark on the swivel plate coincides with
the zero line on the graduated dial. Vernier scales give the exact readings. The Bevel Protractor
is used to measure and test angles up to very close tolerances. It can be able to read up to 5
arcminutes. An angle protractor has a full round scale that consists of 360 degrees. Not all
straightforward protractors that give degree estimations. One Vernier scale reading is
equivalent to 1/12 of a degree, which gives a precise estimation of the angle. The following is
the labelled diagram of a Vernier Bevel Protractor

Main Parts of Bevel Protractor:

Main Scale
Main scale is also known as the primary scale of the Vernier bevel protractor. The main scale
reading is taken at first during the angle measurements. The values of angles taken from the
main scale are as usual in degrees.
Vernier Scale
Vernier scale is also known as the secondary scale of the Vernier bevel protractor. The Vernier
scale reading is taken after observing the readings on the main scale. The values of angles
measured from the Vernier scale are in minutes and are read in seconds for attaining higher
accuracy level.

Stock
During the angle measurement it is one of the surfaces that comes in contact with the surface
of the object of which the angles are to be measured. It is preferred that it should be kept in
contact with the datum surface from which the angle is to be measured.
Dial
The dial is a combined part of the stock. It has a circular shape, and the angle values mentioned
on the edges are in degrees.
Adjustable Blade
Adjustable blade is another part that comes in contact with the work or the object during angle
measurement. With the help clamping lever is the fixed with the dial. Whenever it is necessary,
it is possible to move or position the blade longitudinally as a parallel groove is provided in the
center in the middle of the blade for comfortable positioning.
Locking Screws
There are two knurled type locking screws provided, in order to lock the dial to the disc with
one screw and with the other to lock the blade to the dial.
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:
The following are some of the practical applications of the bevel protractor:
• Bevel Protractors are used to measure the internal angles of the beveled face of the ground
surface.
• It is used in automotive industry for measuring the V- Shaped Cylinder block angles.
• The bevel protractor is commonly used by woodworkers who need to make a more complex
design with angles other than 45 and 90 degrees.
• Most protractors are used to measure existing lines. However, they can also be used to construct
new lines.
• Bevel Protractor is commonly used for architectural and mechanical purposes.
• It is used to accurately measure the angle with much accuracy.

PPROCEDURE:
The following are the steps to be considered or follow during the measurement of angles using
Vernier Bevel Protractor:
• Firstly, unbolt the large clamp situated on the anterior of the bevel protractor, it may lead to
the loosening of the blade after, we can be able to rotate it for required setting.
• Secondly, line up the base from one side of the reference point and rotate the blade to the other
in order to make another side of the angle, now after this tight up the Large Clamp.
• Thirdly, we have to find the zero on the Vernier scale which is the smallest scale present inside
of the bevel protractor.
• After this, read the values of angles on the main scale which is graduated directly above the
zero of the Vernier scale. If the zero on the Vernier scale coincides with main scale at 95, it
means the measurement is 95 degrees.
• At Last read the minutes values from the Vernier scale. We have to read the Vernier scale in
a counterclockwise direction, at note the point where the lines of both the main scale and the
Vernier scale coincides. e.g. the both lines coincides at 50, so it means the measurement is 50
minutes.
• For getting the actual measurement with higher accuracy add the reading taken in 4 step and
the 5th step, for example the reading comes out to be 95 degrees, 50 minutes.

FORMULAE USED:
The formula used for measuring the least count of the Vernier Bevel Protractor is given below:
𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞
Least count of Vernier bevel protractor = 𝐓𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐨 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞
𝟔𝟎
=1o (equal to 60’) i.e., 𝟏𝟐 = 5 minutes (written as 5’)

The formula for getting the angle measurement from the bevel protractor is given below:
Vernier Bevel Protractor Reading = Main Scale Reading in Degrees + Vernier Scale
Reading in
Minutes
E.g., Vernier Bevel Protractor Reading = Main Scale Reading, 95 o+ Vernier Scale Reading.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
• The Vernier Bevel Protractor should be cleaned, Dried and hold properly during the angle
measurement.
• There will be no unnecessary Friction in between rotating blade.
• Use the apparatus carefully
• Check the zero error in the protractor and then fix that zero error if present in it.
• Readings should be taken with full attention and balance so that human error will be reduced.
• During each angular measurement lock the protractor using the locking screws so no
instrumentation error will come.
• The object whose angles are to be measured should be cleaned or dust free.
• Don’t slide along abrasive surface
ERRORS & RESULTS:
Bevel Protractor is capable of measuring both internal and external angles. The Bevel
Protractor is appropriate to use. The Readings attained from this metrological instrument are
accurate up to the minutes Readings are taken according to the procedure mentioned above, it
consists of a rotating blade which can be rotated in counter clockwise as well as clockwise
direction.
COMMENTS:
• Bevel Protractor has a limited use in engineering metrology as it only be able to measure line
standard angles but not the face standard angles.
• Bevel Protractors are not capable of measuring the internal tapered angles.
