INTRODUCTION

University of Karachi, founded in 1951, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in
Pakistan. University of Karachi offers rigorous and vibrant Graduate and Post-graduate degree
programs in the fields of Arts, Business Management, Islamic Studies, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy
and Science. These postgraduate programs are being offered in 54 teaching Departments and 17
Research Institutes/Centers, under nine Faculties. The programs have been developed in view of
the emerging needs of industries and R&D organizations both in public and private sectors. The
research and teaching programs are supervised by more than 800 highly qualified and
internationally recognized eminent faculty members.

To date, University of Karachi has produced more than 1300 Ph.Ds and more then 1500 MPhils,
Presently, more than 2600 students are enrolled in M.S.Ph.D and other research programs. The
excellence in academics, research and development has placed University of Karachi among the
World Top 600 Universities as ranked by QS World University Ranking out of 17000
Universities around the world, Whereas its rank in Natural Sciences is 223rd which is the highest
ranking for any Pakistani University.

In pursuance of acquiring excellence in research, faculty of the University has been actively
involved in supervising research projects, results of which are being accepted and published in
top quality journals of international repute, In 2007-08 alone, the faculty of the University of
Karachi has published more than 700 research papers in peer-reviewed journals indexed by
Thomson-Reuter (ISI Web of knowledge) and ranked at number two among 60
Universities/institution (public and private sectors) of Pakistan. The alumni of the university are
holding key positions in various prestigious national and international organizations.

The University of Karachi provides excellent opportunities to its postgraduate students to hook-
up with the World top Universities under collaborative research and Sandwich/split programs. In
this context, various Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed between University of
Karachi and the counterpart foreign Universities. For instance, in the year 2008—09, interactions
started with the University of Isfahan and University of Hormozgan. Iran; University of Peace,
Costa Rica; University of Apartado, Mexico; University of Bedfordshire and University of
Stafford Shire, UK, University for Foreigners of Perugia and University of Sassari, Italy.
Likewise, University of Karachi is also smoothly running various collaborative research projects
under the supervision of its faculty members with the University of Hamburg, Gremany, at UAE
University, at Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, Beijing, China, University of New South
Wales, Sydney, Australia, Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Munich, Germany, New York
Blood Center, USA and University of Salzburg, Austria, Department of Molecular Microbiology
and Immunology, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University and New Jersey
Medical School, Public Health Research Institute, USA.

REQUIREMENTS / PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO M.S. / Ph.D.

A. Eligibility:

For M.S. / Ph.D. At least sixteen years of studies (Master’s degree-MA., M.Sc.,
MBA, MPA, MAS, MIS, M.Com, 4 years’ B.S, B.Pharm; Pharm-
D, MBBS, BDS, DVM.) or its equivalent qualification with at least
second division in the relevant field. However, candidates with
MBBS, BDS, DVM or equivalent qualifications will be required
to undertake 15 credit hour courses (300-600 level) in addition to
24-credit-hour courses(700 level).

B. Admission Procedure:

M.S./Ph.D.

1. The candidate is required to appear in the University of Karachi Entrance Test


2011.

2. The candidate shall submit the following documents along with the Entrance Test
Application form:
i. Photocopy of the last transcript/marks statement.
ii. Photocopy of Computerized National Identity Card.
iii. Two passport size photographs.
iv. Copy of valid NTS/University of Karachi Entrance Test.

3. i. The candidate will be given 20 percent weightage for Graduate


Assessment Test (NTS) score, if valid, and they will be exempted from appearing
in section I (English + Communication Skills) of the University of Karachi
Entrance Test. However, they will have to clear section II (Subject knowledge and
application of 80% marks).

ii. Students who passed University of Karachi Entrance Test held on 24-1-
2010 will be exempted from appearing in the entrance test for 2011. However,
they will have to apply on the prescribed form.

4. a) The test shall comprise of the following sections:


Section-I English + Communication Skills 20%
Section-II Subject Knowledge and Application 80%

b) The candidate will be required to score at least 40% marks in section I


and 50%marks in section II separately to become eligible for consideration
for provisional admission.

c) Qualifying the admission test is no guarantee to admission.

5. All students who qualify the test will be required to appear in interview to be
conducted by Departmental Research Committee.

C. Provisional Admission:

i. Applications for provisional admission will be considered on the basis of


eligibility, merit, availability of seats and supervisors.
ii. Upto 20% admission will be given to candidates who completed their last
degree from institutions other than Karachi University.
iii. Final admission list will be prepared by Departmental Research Committee
(DRC) according to the following formula:

a. 80% weightage will be for the marks obtained in the last basic degree.
b. 20% weightage will be for the marks obtained in the interview by the
Departmental Research Committee of the concerned Department/ Center/
Institute. Distribution of Interview marks is given in Annex-I.

D. Submission of Forms For Provisional Admission:

Selected candidates for provisional admission are required to submit the following
along with duly filled admission form signed by the Chairperson/Director of the
department/institute/center and the concerned Dean:

i. Two recent passport size photographs duly attested by the


Chairperson/Director of the Departments/Institute/ Centres concerned.
ii. Attested Photocopies of certificates/ degrees from S.S.C. to Masters or
the last pre-requisite exam.
iii. Degree holders of other Universities are required to submit Migration
Certificate.
iv. An attested Photocopy of Computerized National Identity Card.
v. N.O.C. and two year’s leave letter from the employer, if the candidate
is in service or a certificate of non-employment stating that during
research no employment shall be undertaken, executed on a stamp
paper worth Rs. 20/- (attested by Notary Public/ Oath Commissioner).
However, Teachers and Employees of organizations where research
work is done are exempted from leave.
vi. In case of foreign students, N.O.C. from the Ministry of Education,
Government of Pakistan, Islamabad and an attested copy of valid visa
and passport.
vii. Certificate from the Equivalence Committee, University of Karachi, in
case, the accreditation status of the degrees is not clear.
viii. The Admission & Tuition fee, required (Please see fee structure)

E. Course Work:

i. All selected candidates will be required to complete eight courses (3+0 or


2+1) of 24 credit hours in two semesters.
ii. In each semester there will be 4 courses of 3 credit hours (3+0 and /or2+1)
each.
iii. Each student will be required to take 4 interdisciplinary courses and 4 courses
from the parent department on the recommendation of the research supervisor.

iv. Candidates are required to attend 75% classes of each course.
v. The student has to pass the course work with CGPA 3.00 or more. In case the
student fails to get the desired CGPA, he/ she will be allowed to improve the
grade. Only one chance for improvement of each course studied will be given
in the subsequent year.
vi. All students will be required to complete their course work within two years
of provisional admission.
vii. If the student fails to improve his/her grade even after the improvement
chance he/she will be given a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD).

F. Confirmation of Admission:

i. After passing the course work with CGPA 3.0 or more the student will apply
through proper channel for confirmation of admission and approval of
research title.
ii. The student will submit a synopsis along with research topic, bibliography,
name of the Research Supervisor and a copy of the marks certificate issued
by the Semester Examination Section duly forwarded by the Supervisor,
Chairperson & concerned Dean.

G. Duration of Study:

The duration of M.S or M.S. / PhD or PhD program is as under:


a) M.S. Minimum two and Maximum five years from the date of
provisional admission.
b) Ph.D.
i. Minimum one and maximum five years from the date of
conversion to Ph.D.
ii. Minimum two years and maximum five years for those admitted
directly to Ph.D.

H. Evaluation & Award of M.S. Degree:

The thesis will be evaluated by two external examiners and the supervisor
appointed by the BASR. The MS degree will be awarded after receipt of positive
reports from the examiners, supervisor, successful oral defense of the thesis and
approval by the BASR.

I. Conversion to PhD:

After one year of research, a student may apply for conversion from M.S. /Ph.D.
to Ph.D. in consultation with the Supervisor. The application should be duly
forwarded by the Chairperson and recommended by the concerned Dean.

REQUIREMENTS/ PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO PhD

A. Eligibility:

I. M.S., M.Pharm., M.Phil., LLM or equivalent qualification in the relevant field


from a recognized University.
II. The admission will be granted on the basis of Test/Interview by Departmental
Research Committee as per detail given in Annex-II.

C. Evaluation and Award of PhD Degree:

i. During the research, the student has to publish at least one paper in one of the
reputed journals and submit a copy of the paper or a letter of acceptance along with
the thesis to BASR. However, he/she will be required to submit a copy of the
published research paper before the award of Ph.D. Degree.
ii. The thesis will be evaluated by two foreign examiners from developed countries
(subject to availability) and the supervisor appointed by the BASR.
iii. The Ph.D. degree will be awarded after the receipt of positive reports from the
examiners, supervisor, successful oral defense of the thesis and approval by the
BASR.

APPOINTMENT OF SUPERVISOR:

Faculty members of University of Karachi/BASR approved supervisors holding


M.Phil. / Ph.D. degree will be appointed as Supervisors of M.S., Ph.D. candidates
respectively.

PhD IN LAW:
Each candidate will have to qualify both sections of Karachi University
Entrance Test consisting of the following.

1) Section I i. General English 15 Marks


ii. Essay
Section II i. Jurisprudence 45 Marks
ii. Islamic Jurisprudence
iii. Interpretation of Statutes

2). The candidates securing 60% marks in each section shall be considered eligible to
appear before the interview committee along with proposed research project, synopsis
duly prepared in consultation with a qualified supervisor.

3). Final merit list of the candidates will be prepared based on the following criteria.
a) Academic achievements 20%(based on marks obtained in LLM)
b) KU Entrance Test 60 %( based on score on Entrance Test)
c) Interview/Viva Voce 20%(based on marks obtained in interview)

REQUIREMENTS/PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO
M.S. (Surgery)/ M.D.(Medicine)

Eligibility:
i. Bachelor of medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) and BDS or
equivalent qualification from a recognized University plus one year house job.
ii. Copy of the valid registration certificate from Pakistan Medical and Dental
Council (P.M. &D.C.).

Admission Procedure:

1. The candidate is required to appear in the University of Karachi Entrance Test


2011.
2. The candidate shall submit the following documents attested by class-I Gazette
officer along with the Entrance Test Application Form:
i. Photocopy of the last degree.
ii. Copy of the valid registration certificate from Pakistan Medical and
Dental Council (P.M. & D.C.)
iii. Photocopy of Computerized National Identity Card.
iv. Two passport size photographs.
v. Copy of valid NTS/University of Karachi Entrance Test.
3. i. Candidate will be given 20 percent weightage for Graduate Assessment Test
NTS score, if valid, and they will be exempted from appearing in section I
(English+Communication Skills) of the University of Karachi Entrance
Test. However, they will have to clear section II (Subject knowledge and
application of 80% marks)

4. The test shall comprise of the following sections:

(Test Specification: The test will be based on core knowledge of basic medical
science subjects for medicine faculty which includes Regional & applied Anatomy
including Histology and Medical Embryology, Medical Physiology including
Medical Biochemistry, Medical Pharmacology, General Pathology including Medical
Microbiology & Parasitology.)

b. The candidates will be required to score at least 40% marks in section-I and
50% marks in section-II separately to become eligible for consideration for
provisional admission.

c. Qualifying the admission test is no guarantee to admission.

5. After qualifying the test the candidate is required to submit the following along
with the admission form.

i. Two recent passport size photographs duly attested by the Head of


Department / Centre/ Institute concerned.
ii. Copy of the valid registration certificate from Pakistan medical and Dental
council (P.M. & D.C.).
iii. Degree holders of other Universities are required to submit Migration
Certificates.
iv. Photocopy of computerized National Identity Card.
v. 4 years leave (1 year for course work and 3 years training under his /her
supervisor) certificate from the employer. Leave will be 5 years in case of
sub-specialties. However, if the candidate is in service under his /her
supervisor, NOC and 1 year leave (deputation letter) from the employer is
required.
vi. A certificate of non-employment stating that during training no employment
(other than training program) shall be undertaken/ executed on a stamp paper
worth Rs. 20/- (attested by Notary Public/ Oath Commissioner).
vii. In case of foreign students, N.O.C, from the Ministry of Education,
Government of Pakistan, Islamabad and an attested copy of valid visa &
passport.
viii. Certificate from the Equivalence Committee, University of Karachi, in case,
the accreditation status of the degrees is not clear.
ix. The Admission & Tuition fee, given in fee structure (see page 15).

Appointment of the Supervisor:


Every student will have to select a supervisor and training slot at the beginning of the
program. The supervisor must fulfill the criteria of the University of Karachi.

BASR shall approve the detailed plan of work on the subject or any of its branches and
the supervisor on the recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine.

Criteria of Appointment of Supervisor:


1. The Supervisor should have major postgraduate degree/ diploma i.e.
FCPS, Ph.D., FRCS, FRCP, MRCOG, MS, MD or equivalent with at least
5 years standing.
2. The Supervisor should be working in an academic position (at least
Associate Professor) in a teaching hospital/ institution.
3. The Supervisor of some other training/research program e.g. FCPS, should
not have more than 8 trainees.
4. The Supervisor should provide University of Karachi with a structured
training program for his candidate, including one year course work.
5. The Supervisor will guide his student in synopsis writing and cheek the
synopsis before submission to University of Karachi.

Other details of the Program

i. Duration of the program will be four years. During the first year the student
will be required to complete 24 credit hours (3+0 and/or 2+1) courses of basic [[[

sciences at University of Karachi. Courses will be selected by supervisor. The


next 3 years will be structured clinical training program under the supervisor.
ii. There will be three assessments:
A. Basic sciences examination to be conducted by relevant department of the
University of Karachi after course work.
B. Thesis evaluation
C. Theory and clinical/practical examination by three examiners selected by
BASR. The supervisor will not be an examiner.
iii. Candidates having MRCP, FRCS MRCOG, FCPS or other major degree/
equivalent will be exempted from Part-A and theory Part of Part-C.
Accordingly they will be exempted from 1 year course work and their training
period will be reduced to 2 years only.

Examination:

The examination shall consist of three parts.

Part A-Basic Sciences Examination:

Basic Sciences examination to be conducted by relevant, departments of University of


Karachi. At the end of each course, if the candidate fails, he/she has to re-appear and pass
within 2 years of finishing course work. Only 4 attempts will be allowed. Meanwhile,
he/she can join the clinical training program under intimation to the BASR section. In
case the candidate fails to clear the basic science course exams, he will discontinue the
program. However, he/she will be given a certificate of attendance only.

Part B-Thesis:

a) Each candidate shall submit a thesis dealing with the subject or any of its
branches.

b) The candidate shall submit a declaration to the effect that thesis embodies the
work conducted by the candidate.

c) The supervisor shall also submit a certificate to the effect that the facilities did
exist at the institute for the work embodied in the thesis and that the work has
not already been submitted as a thesis to any other university.

d) The thesis shall be examined by two examiners appointed by BASR on the


recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine.

e) The examiners shall report as to whether the thesis be accepted or rejected. In
the event of a disagreement between the examiners, BASR shall appoint a third
examiner and the opinion of two of the three examiners shall be carried.

f) Inadequacy of the thesis will be graded as

1. Inadequate: a. Minor alterations indicated, no extensive revision


required, resubmission within 6 months.
b. Resubmission in revised form not later than a date
prescribed.
2. Totally inadequate: Rejected.

g) After approval of the thesis, the candidate shall be permitted to appear in Part-C
of the examination.

Part C-Theory and clinical and/ or practical examination:

The examination shall consist of:


i) One written paper in each of the three subjects approved by the
BASR on recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine.
ii) A viva voce and clinical/ practical examination conducted by a
panel of three examiners approved by the BASR on
recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine. The
Supervisor will not be an examiner.
The viva voce examination shall cover the entire field of the
subject examiner including the thesis.
iii) Successful candidates will be declared as:
a) Passed
b) Passed with distinction.
iv) The candidates failing in Part-C shall have to appear in whole of
the Part-C examination in each of the successive attempts. The
candidate shall not be allowed to change the specialty. Only five
total attempts shall be allowed to within three years of completion
of training.
v) Candidates having MRCP (UK), FRCS (UK), MRCOG (UK),
FCPS (Pak) or and equivalent qualification, recognized by the
Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, will be exempted from Part-
A examination and written examination theory of Part-C.
However, the candidate shall have to appear for a viva voce and
clinical examination before the panel of examiners, appointed by
BASR on the recommendation of the Board of faculty of
Medicine.
