Purpose of the Portfolio
This portfolio serves as the compilation of all the observed activities, learning
strategies, learning tasks, instructional materials and assessment tools that were used by
the teachers during my observation in their class.
MEANINGFUL
LEARNING
I had given a chance to observe three classes one
at a time with different set of students and different teacher each and I noticed that there
are different methods and strategies, instructional materials and assessment tools that
being used by these teachers to make sure that the teaching-learning process takes place.
1. In the first class (Ma’am Gloria Zara with Grade 8- Acasia), when it comes to the
techniques/methods/strategies, I have observed that the teacher used an
educational approach which is the collaborative learning wherein the students
are working together to solve a certain task. The students were mutually searching
for understanding, solutions, or meanings that can develop their higher-order
thinking skills, oral communication, self-management and as well as their
leadership skills.. The students were not only collaborating with their classmates
but also with their teacher which promotes a student-faculty interaction.
When it comes to instructional materials, they were using some printed materials
such as Xerox copy containing the procedures they need to follow to perform the
3|Page
task. Then, 20mins before the end of their class, the teacher asked them to
perform what they have practiced and graded them based on their performance.
2. Now, in the second class with Ma’am Chorelyn Manalo in Grade 8 Waling-
waling, she used a kind of strategy wherein students can freely participate with
the discussion which is the free form discussion. She asked some questions and
her students were actively raising their hands and answer correctly. The students
are free to share their ideas. She was using different IM’s to facilitate the
teaching-learning process in her class. She was using her laptop and the
television. Then after, some students were asked to stand in front to answer some
of her questions.

3. In the last class that I observed(Sir Joseph Angeles with Grade 10-Narra), I
noticed that he was using several types of strategies in teaching his students.
There are three educational approaches that he used which are collaborative
learning, free form discussion and lastly, inquiry-based teaching. He used
collaborative learning by having not only an interaction between him and his
students but also a student to student interaction. Then, I can say that he also used
the free form discussion because the students were free to share their thoughts,
ideas and suggestions about the topic he’s discussing. He also used another
educational approach which is the inquiry-based teaching wherein he was
providing some questions, problems or scenarios rather than simply giving the
information needed by the students. There are many materials that he used in
facilitating the learning of the students such as laptop, textbooks and a television.

REFLECTION
After my observation, I realized that there are many methods and strategies that
teachers can use in facilitating the teaching-learning process. I learned that it is a must for
a teacher to know different strategies because it will enable him/her to develop the right
strategy to deal with his/her students. I also learned that these strategies are steps taken by
students to enhance their own learning. Another important thing is choosing/selecting the
best and appropriate instructional materials depending on the topic your about to discuss.
Instructional materials should be accurate and engage the interest of the learners
throughout the period. Teachers should have enough knowledge about the subject matter
of course to sustain the knowledge needed by the learners.

LEARNERS
ASSISTING A TEACHER
A: Good morning.
Q2: Thank you Sir, but before we start, can you please share something about your
background as a teacher? Like for instance, your Bachelor’s degree, Masters’ degree or
Doctorate degree?
A: I had my degree at the Lipa City Public Colleges, and that’s BSED major in English. I
took my Masters at the Lipa City Colleges, I majored Educational Management.
Currently, I am taking up Ph.D. major in Educational Management at the Batangas State
University.
Q3: Thank you sir, by the way sir, when did you start your teaching career?
10 | P a g e
A: I graduated April 2007 and May 2007, I am employed as a teacher in a private school
then I taught at G.B Lontok Memorial School. After that, I worked as a substitute teacher
in Lodlod National High School for 2 months then I was given permanent position so the
rest is history.
Q5: Ahm, Sir, regarding the teaching-learning process, based on what I have observed
from your class this afternoon, what are the different strategies/techniques/methods that
you used?
A: Cooperative Learning, inquiry-based teaching, and of course the free form discussion.
A: It proved to be effective.
Q7: In line with your instructional materials, why did you use those materials? Is it really
applicable to use those kinds of materials in the topic?
A: Yes. Multi-media and multi-sensory materials are effective materials to deliver quality
lesson.
A: Yes, there are lots. Like it should be age-appropriate, gender sensitive , flexible,
resources availability sensitive and efficient.
A: Yes! They go hand and hand. To employ effective techniques and strategies , it should
be accompanied by appropriate materials.
Q10: How about the objectives Sir, is it a need to align the materials and strategies with
the objectives? Why?

Interview with a Learner (Narrative Report)
I asked Sir Joseph Angeles to recommend a learner who needs help/assistance in a
concept/skill and I interviewed him.
He is Dominic Francis Castillo, a grade- 9 student in Lodlod National High School. His
interests are watching Tagalog and English movies, playing volleyball and surfing the
net. I asked him about what his needs in learning and he told me that in order for him to
learn something, he needs books, his phone for him to search for something and music to
make him relax and focus. I also asked him about his difficulties and he told me three
things in which he find hard to execute including understanding math
problems/equations, memorization and reporting. Then I shared him some of my
techniques as a student when it comes to math problems, memorization and reporting. I
told him that it is important to know what your goal is. In math, I told him that it is okay
to tell his teacher that he didn’t understand the lesson and ask to make it easier to
understand. When it comes to memorizing something, I told him that it is important that
12 | P a g e
he truly understands what he’s reading and it is a good thing if he can translate it with his
own words same thing when he is reporting. It is a must to know what you’re saying in
front of the class so if your classmate ask something about your report, you can answer
with your own understanding.
Here, I learned that as a teacher, you should have a strategy that suits your
topic and your students. I mean, you cannot use the same strategies with
different set of students because these students have different interests,
abilities and needs depending on their age and the grade level they are in.

able to identify the corresponding theories of learning applied by the teacher
in the activity and I had given a chance to think of an activity which I think I
could use in the future.
Assisting a Teacher
During my interview with Sir Joseph Angeles, I saw how important his
teaching career for him, how dedicated he is in his craft and how much he
wanted to affect his students’ lives in a very good way. I learned so many
things from him since then when he’s still my teacher in High School, and I
am surprised that even now that I’m in college, he’s still there teaching me
unconsciously things or techniques that I can use in the field someday.
Then, while interviewing Dominic the learner, I can somehow relate with him
as a student because as I have said, each students have different interests,
beliefs, needs and abilities. It is important to know how to handle your
difficulties as a student because no one can help you aside from yourself.

4. What do you think is the importance of using varied a) methods and strategies, b)
instructional materiasls, and nnc) assessment tools in teaching?
The importance of using varied methods and strategies is that the teachers
can give the exact or more than enough knowledge that the learners’ have to gain.
The teachers can deliver accurate and updated content knowledge using
appropriate strategies.
It is important to choose the instructional you are going to use to keep the
interest of the students and these materials should be appropriate with the content
of the subject matter.
By the use of some assessment tools, you can see if your strategies and the
instructional materials that you used are really effective in facilitating the
teaching-learning process. After the assessment, base on the outcome or scores of
19 | P a g e
your students, you can now tell if you’re still going to use the same tactics and
materials for your next lesson or you have to improve/change it.
