1. Scope:

This Method statement covers the material used in manufacturing of Spherical Bearing & Its
Installation.

2. Function:

This bearing only takes care of vertical load and horizontal force due to sliding friction. The
bearing will permit uniaxial translatory movement along longitudinal axis of the bridge and rotation
along all axes.

4. STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES:-

The responsibility for correct and safe execution of the works falls within the Project in-charge with
delegated responsibility to the Section Manager. The section Manager further delegate
responsibility to engineer & Supervisor.

5.PURPOSE:-
The purpose of this procedure is to describe the installation of the Spherical bearing supporting the
standard spans and the horizontal adjustment of these spans which will be erected by launching
gantry using the span by span method.

9. SEQUENCE OF WORK:
 Delivery Inspection & Storage of Spherical Bearing on Site after Surface preparation.

10. WORK PROCEDURE:

10.1. Educating team about Construction Work Procedure (CWP).

The construction team shall be educated about the approved Construction Work Procedure
(CWP) by Construction manager.

10.2. Delivery Inspection & Storage of Bearings on Site

The factory made Spherical bearings duly approved, tested and inspected by third consultant for
use shall be delivered to site. Each Spherical bearing shall be clearly labeled and marked. The
Bearing shall be wrapped in a cover. They shall be packed in crates with suitable arrangement to
prevent movement and to protect corners and edges. Care shall be taken to avoid any damage,
contamination with oil, grease, dirt, and undue exposure to sunlight and weather.

10.3 Surface Preparation

The concrete surface of the Pedestal in contact with Spherical bearing shall be cleaned and
smoothened before installation of Spherical bearing. It shall be cleaned to remove any loosely
adherent material, grease & oil so as to form a proper bonding between the concrete and Spherical
bearing. Soak the grouting concrete area with fresh potable water 4 hours before grouting and
remove the free water before grouting starts, using sponge.

10.4 Preliminary Checks

 Before starting the permanent bearings installation and span adjustment check.
 The spherical bearing has been checked and approved by client.
 That the horizontal surface of the elastomeric bearing is cleaned of grease/dust/sand.
 Installation of multiple bearing one behind the other on a single line of support should have same
dimension .
 Bearing placed between true horizontal surfaces (Max. Tolerance 0.2 % perpendicular to the load)
and at true plan position of their control line marked on receiving surface (Max. Tolerance +/-3
mm).
 Concrete surfaces shall be free from local irregularities (Max. Tolerance +/-3 mm in height).
 Design shall be checked for the actual inclination in seating if accuracy deviated more than
specified limit.
 Cast in place formwork around the bearings shall be soft enough for its easy removal. From shall
also fit the bearings snugly and prevent any leakage of mortar grout. Mortar contaminating the
bearing during concreting shall be completely removed before setting.
 If the bearing are to be installed on pre-cast concrete or steel super structure elements, epoxy resin
adhesive may be applied on interface, after proper surface preparation.

10.5 Installation Procedure

 Installation of multiple bearing one behind the other on single line of support should have some

true plan position of their control line marked on receiving surface (Max. Tolerance +/-3mm)

 Concrete Surface shall be free from level Irregularities ( Max. tolerance +/-3mm in height).
 In the case pedestal level is lower than required height the same shall be raised by application of
FOSROC GP-2 / FOSROC EP-75 . The selection of material and application is as following.

 A-1 to 10 mm Correction:- For minor correction in bearing pedestal up to 10 mm shall be


maintained by application of EP-75 epoxy mortar. The surface shall be made rough prior to
application by using grinder wheel. The surface shall be in fully dry condition. Side shutter of
plywood of 6mm thick / 3mm steel plate wrapped with brown tap to avoid the adherence of
mortar to shutter plate. After arranging the shutter three compound EP-75 shall be poured after
mixing as specified in the technical data sheet. Removal of shutter and application of working load
shall be applied after 12 hours of pouring.

 B-10 to 25 mm of correction:- For correction of pedestal which is lower by an amount of


10 to 25 mm shall be corrected by using FOSROC EP-75 , The method of mixing shall be with
manual means for all the three components. Before application of material over the pedestal the
surface shall be hacked and cleaned from dust and dirt. Side shutter of steel sheet / ply wood
wrapped with brown tape on the surface coming under contact of EP-75 Shall be done. Steel
/TMT unidirectional bar mesh of dia. 8/10mm shall be placed and held in position by providing
Cover block of required thickness . the mixed material shall be poured in fixed shutter upto the

 C-25 to 40 mm of correction:- If the required correction in pedestal level is from 25 to 40 mm


the material selected for correction should be conbextra GP-2 or Equivalent cementatious
Product. The bearing pedestal before application of the GP-2 shall be kept moist for 10-12
Hours by using wet hessian cloth. After marking the surface wet side shutter shall be arranged
And material mixed at water/ powder ratio of 0.165 shall be poured. Unidirectional wire mesh of
Dia. 12/16 mm shall be provided in between the layer of GP-2. The leveling of surface shall be

 D-If correction is more than 25 mm the existing pedestal shall be broken from top up to the

 Install the lifting jacks/ sliding plates. Link jack on the end of the span. Lift span by acting of
jacks. The span should be raised a few millimeters above the final permanent bearing.
 Both end can be lifted simultaneity or one by one. In case of final level of the span is more than
150 mm of the temporary level the lifting has to be conducted in several steps as follow.

1. Lift the span at maximum stroke of the jack.

2. Install steel plates on top up temporary bearing.

3. Retract the jack

4. Install steel plates on top up the jack

5. Lift the span

6. Remove temporary bearings

7. Place permanent bearing

8. Check the survey and adjust the span transverse position and longitudinal position.

10.4. Installation of ( All Types) Spherical bearings

The Spherical bearing shall be positioned and placed on the Concrete Pedestal as per drawing. The
bearing shall be aligned to the line and level approximately to final requirement.

10.5 Shuttering of (All Types)Spherical bearings


Plywood shutters shall be used as formwork for the grouting of bearing.
The shutter shall be sealed with renderoc plug (FOSROC) or equivalent, to prevent grout
leakage.
Forms shall be coated with compatible form oil to facilitate easy removal.
10.6 Grouting of ( All Types) Spherical bearings
Only approved and tested grout shall be used for grouting of the bearing. The grout shall
be in
accordance with design specifications and should be capable of achieving the required
Strengths of 65 Mpa in 28 days as per the parameters set in the operation sequence program.
The grout shall be stored at a dedicated place on site in accordance with the
manufacturer’s
Recommendations. The mixing of grout shall be carried out in accordance with the
Manufacturer’s data sheets. Water powder ratio shall be maintained as per the material
used
FOSROC- Conbextra GP2 or SIKA 214 or other equalant material). The temperature of grout mix to
be used shall be less than 25°C.
The grout should have good flow ability characteristics. The grout shall be mixed in mixing
drum on the top of deck. A scaffold with suitable height shall be erected from the top of the pier cap
right above the location where the bearing is to be grouted and to the top of segment deck.
Mechanical agitator shall be used for mixing the grout. After obtaining a colloidal mix the
grouting activity shall proceed. If the actual thickness of the grout exceeds 100 mm the
cementatious grout shall be mixed with 10 mm down aggregates (10 mm passing and
retained
on 6.3 mm sieve) in a ratio of 2:1.The grouting operation shall be completed within 30
minutes.
One set (3 cubes) shall be casted for checking the compressive strength on 7 days and one set
(3 cubes) shall be casted for checking strength on 28 days.

The following points shall be considered during grouting operation:


 The proper use of flat tapes is extremely important.
 Grout spillage on bearings shall be removed when still wet.
 Craftsman for grouting needs to be trained and well experienced.
 The grout shall be inspected at regular intervals for any cracks and if found shall be grouted with low
viscous epoxy (Master Inject 1315) from BASF or Nitofill EPLV from Fosroc or Sika equivalent grout
material by injection method.

10.7 Curing

Immediately after De shuttering is completed, the bearing grout shall be cured with Hessian cloth or
for seven days.

14. MANDATORY SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:


 Every workman must be engaged after Screening, Safety induct ion &
Medical test with a valid ID card.
 Appropriate PPE shall be used at all times.
 Work shall be executed in competent and continuous supervision.
 Any un-authorized activity shall be strictly prohibited.
 There should be proper co-ordination and communication between teams/workmen at all times.
 Proper housekeeping shall be maintained.
 Required inspections shall be carried out prior to start work.
 TBT shall be conducted before starting work.

a. Daily safety pep talk shall be given by Construction Manager to the staff and workmen.

b. Before commencement of the work, Construction work Procedure shall be explained to the staffs.
