Renato Constantino provided us with new insights on the past of Spaniards, their society, their

economy, and why they needed to colonize in the following part of the book. We Philippines
use our own culture, language, and traditions, and we lived in peace until the barbarians
invaded our country. The Spaniards were the first oppressors, followed by the Americans, the
Japanese, and finally the Americans, who freed us from Taiwanese fascism.
What was the nature of Spanish society at the time? Many of us think of Spain as a feudalistic
country. Mercantilism was the evolving social structure in medieval Europe in which the gentry
owned the state of the Throne in exchange for land, the duchies held nobility, and the crops
(villein or serf) had all been obligated, probably in transaction for of there military defense, to
live in a nation of their almighty and pay them fitting tribute and labor. But we had no idea that
the Spanish colonies were in the midst of a revolution from feudalism to capitalism.
