Problem 1: (Buckling)
A 2-m-long pin-ended column of square cross section is to be made of
wood. Assuming E = 13 GPa, allowable stress =12 MPa, and using a
factor of safety of 2.5 in computing Euler’s critical load for buckling,
determine the size
of the cross section if the column is to safely support
(a) a 100-kN load,
(b) a 200-kN load

Problem 2:[1.16]
When the force P reached 8 kN, the wooden specimen shown failed
in shear along the surface indicated by the dashed line. Determine
the average shearing stress along that surface at the time of failure.

Problem 3: shear Stress [1.16]
The wooden members A and B are to be joined by ply wood splice plates that
would be fully glued on the surface in contact. As part of the design of the joined,
and knowing that the clearance between the ends of the members is to be 6-mm,
determine the smallest allowable length L if the average shear stress in the glue in
not to exceed 840 kPa.

Problem 4 [1.6]:
A strain gage located at C on the surface of bone AB indicates that the average normal
stress in the bone is 3.80 MPa when the bone is subjected to two 1200-N forces as shown.
Assuming the cross section of the bone at C to be annular and knowing that its outer
diameter is 25 mm, determine the inner diameter of the bone’s cross section at C.
Solution:

Problem 5 [1.5]:
Two steel plates are to be held together by means of 16-mm-
diameter high-strength steel bolts fitting snugly inside cylindrical
brass spacers. Knowing that the average normal stress must not
exceed 200 MPa in the bolts and 130 MPa in the spacers,
determine the outer diameter of the spacers that yields the most
economical and safe design.
