Section B carries 75 marks. All the questions of Section B are compulsory and carry equal marks.
Q. No. Marks CO
Q 1. A double cover triple riveted butt joint is required to connect two 12.25
mm steel plates. Determine the nominal diameter of rivets, gross
diameter of rivets, thickness of the cover plates and pitch of the rivets in
the joint. Determine the efficiency of this joint if permissible stresses in 05 CO1
tension, shearing and crushing are 150 MPa, 100 MPa and 240 MPa
respectively. Assume joint to be continuous where rivets are arranged in
zigzag pattern with same pitch in all rivet rows.
For the beam and loading shown in figure below, determine the
maximum deflection. Take EI = 8.3 x 105 Nm2.

Q 3. A steel rod 30 mm diameter and 300 mm long is subjected to a tensile
force P acting axially. The temperature of the rod is then raised through 05 CO1
80 oC and the total extension measured as 0.35mm. Calculate the value
of P. Take Es = 200GN/m2 and αs =12 x 10-6 per oC.
A 3.0 m long steel shaft ABCD consists of three segments (AB, BC, CD) of
different cross-sections; the segment AB is hollow with external and
internal diameters of 100 mm and 60 mm respectively; the segments BC
and CD are solid having diameters 100 mm and 85 mm respectively. The
shaft is subjected to equal and opposite torques at the ends and the
angle of twist is the same for each segment. Determine: (a) the length of
three segments, (b) the torque that can be transmitted by the shaft, and
(c) the total angle of twist. Take maximum shearing stress in hollow 10 CO1
segment to be 45 MPa and modulus of rigidity for steel to be 80 GPa. CO2
Q4. At a point in a stressed body, the principal stresses are 100 MN/m2
(tensile) and 60 MN/m2 (compressive). Determine the normal stress and
the shear stress on a plane inclined at 50o counter clockwise to the axis 09
of minor principal stress. Also, calculate the maximum shear stress at the
point and draw the Mohr’s stress circle to verify the answers. CO3

If the yield strength and Poisson’s ratio of the material in the above case
is 240 MPa and 0.3 respectively, check whether the failure will occur or
not according to (a) Maximum principal strain theory and (b) Maximum 06
shear strain energy per unit volume theory. If failure does not occur,
calculate the Factor of Safety.
Q.5 An overhanging beam roller supported at B and hinged at E is loaded as
shown in figure below. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams
by indicating the principal values at all the points and position of point 09
of contra-flexure.

This beam has the cross-section of isosceles triangle with height to base
ratio as 1.5. Determine the least safe dimensions of the cross-section, if 06
the allowable stresses in tension, compression and shear are 140 MPa,
100 MPa and 50 MPa respectively.
