Subject: ATD (18ME42) Class: IV. Date: 16/6/2021
Max Marks: 30
Note: - Solve any ONE full Question from each PART
Q.No. PART A Marks COs POs RBT
1. a) Compare Otto, Diesel and Dual cycle based on:
i) Efficiency and compression ratio. 09 1 1 L2
ii) Same compression ratio and heat input.
iii) Constant maximum pressure and heat supply.
b) An engine with 200mm cylinder diameter and 300mm stroke length, works on the
theoretical Diesel cycle. The initial pressure and temperature of air are
1 bar and 27°C. The cut off is at 8% of the stroke and compression ratio is 15.
06 1 1 L3
Determine: i) pressure and temperature at all salient points of the cycle. ii)
Theoretical air standard efficiency. iii) M.E.P. iv) Power developed if there are
400 working strokes/min

2. a) With p – θ diagram explain the stages of combustion in CI engine. 06 2 1 L2

b) The following observations were made during a test on a two stroke oil
engine: Room temperature = 22°C; Bore = 20cm; stroke = 25cm; speed =
350rpm, Brake drum diameter = 1.2m, MEP = 2.8bar, Net brake load = 450N, Oil
consumption = 3.6kg/h, CV of oil = 41800kJ/kg, Quantity of jacket cooling
water = 455 kg/h, Rise in temperature of jacket water = 28°C. Temperature of 09 1 1 L3
exhaust gases entering and leaving the exhaust gas calorimeter are 320°C and
220°C respectively. Quality of water passing through the exhaust gas
calorimeter is 8 kg/min. Temperature rise of calorimeter water = 9°C.
Determine the indicated and brake power, mechanical efficiency and brake thermal
efficiency. Draw the heat balance sheet on one minute basis.
PART B
3. a) For a simple gas turbine cycle, the optimum pressure ratio for maximum work
output of cycle is given by

rp =
09 2 1,2 L3
Where are the isentropic efficiencies of compressor and turbine
respectively. T3 and T1 are maximum and minimum temperature of the
cycle respectively. γ = .
b) With neat sketch, explain turbine cycle with regenerator and derive cycle
06 2 1,2 L3
efficiency.(Method of improvement of efficiency)
4) a) In a gas turbine plant, air enters the compressor at 15°C and it is compressed
through a pressure ratio of 4 with isentropic efficiency of 85%. The air-fuel ratio
is 80 and the calorific value of fuel is 42000 kJ/kg. The turbine inlet
08 2 1,2 L3
temperature is 1000 K and the isentropic efficiency of the turbine is 82%.
Calculate the overall efficiency and air intake for a power output of 260 kW. Take
the mass of fuel in account.
b) Air is compressed from 100kPa, 300K to 1000kPa in a two stage compressor with
intercooling between stages. The air is compressed to 300kPa and is cooled
back to 300K in an intercooler before entering the second stage compressor.
Each compression stage is isentropic. For steady state operation and negligible
changes in kinetic and potential energy from inlet to exit, determine: a) 07 2 1,2 L3
Temperature at exit of second compressor, b) The total compressor work
input per unit of mass flow, c) Reduction work input by intercooling and two
stage compression, d) Isothermal compression work.
