Standard:
3.6.4 Take, record, and display counts and simple measurements of things over time, such as
plant or student growth
Unpacked:
Knowledge Skills
Objective(s):
The student will observe and record plant growth in journal at least 5 different times.
The student ill plant a seed and begin to observe the complete life cycle of flowering plants
grown from seeds over a period of time.
Assessment (EVALUATION):
(Teacher will collect journal at the end of each week to check for understanding)
Prep/Materials:
Get book, A Seed in Need: A First Look at the Plant Cycle by Sam Godwin and Simone Abel.
Lesson Title: Life Cycle of a Plant Grade level: 3rd Grade SCIENCE—5E

Prepare journals for students or have folders for students to keep for unit.
INTRODUCATION (ENGAGE):
What part do you think is the beginning part of the plant? (Blooms, Knowledge)
What do you think are the stages of a plant cycle? (Blooms, Analysis)
How long ago do you think the seed was planted? (Blooms, Analysis)
Teacher will decide where each student will plant their seeds. Outside/in a pot
outside/in a pot inside
3. Teacher will demonstrate how to use the gardening tools and safety precautions.
4. Students will dig soil, plant seeds, and install plastic labels.

5. Teacher will talk about the difference between wants and needs and then talk about how
plants have needs also.
6. Teacher will read the book A Seed in Need: A First Look at the Plant Cycle by Sam Godwin and
Simone Abel. (Gardner, Intrapersonal)
7. Discuss the needs of seeds and how they need air, water, and warmth.
8. Discuss the needs of a plant and how they need air, water, sunlight and nutrients in order to
survive.
9. Tell students for the next few weeks they will be measuring and recording how their plant is
growing. Each day during science they will record the changes and once a week measure the
growth of their plant. Once a week students will be able to look at the different plots and
compare how the plants look. (Blooms, Analysis)
CLOUSURE (EXTEND)
In places where farmers grow crops, what happens if there is a drought? (Blooms,
Application)
Explain to students that throughout the next few weeks we will be learning more about plants
and the different needs of a plant. Also tell students that we are going to pay close attention to
our plants to see how they grow and what happens if we take away one of the needs. Tell
students that next Monday will be the first day we will measure out plants and will review
measurements during math time today and tomorrow.
Student with a learning disability in math: Have groups assigned and place students that are
more helpful and patient with student with learning disability so he/she can explain the process
in detail.
Student with gifts and talents in creativity: Have student create a 3-D model of the plant at
the end of the unit to show the parts of a plant.
