1. The three important things I have learned about sacred music and its
musical elements are;
 Musical elements are important in analyzing and evaluating music.
 Religious music (sacred music) is music performed or composed for
religious use or through religious influence.
 The six elements, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, form, timbre and texture,
are universally considered to be the fundamental systems that underpin
all music.
2. The questions remained unanswered in my mind is how sacred music and
musical elements works, what year this was created and who created this?

It shows the traditional way of courtship It shows the current
modern way of courtship

Pictures A & B
(Similarities)
Both Pictures A and B shows the technique on how to court.

1. Both Pictures A and B show the technique on how to court.

2. I prefer picture a, because that is a better way to meet than the picture B
that, computers or gadgets are used just to talk to loved ones. In Picture A
you can see the characteristics of that person and how he really loves you.

What is It
1. I notice that they have the same rhythmic style.
2. Harana, also known as Habanera Filipina, is a Philippine serenade
which derives its rhythmic element from the Spanish Tango or
Habanera. While the Spanish version has a lively, seductive tempo, the
Filipino version is romantic, lyrical and slow.

2. I notice the theme of the song sung in different languages, it is the tone or
how the singer express his/her emotion when he/she sung in different
languages and it is a folksong.

What’s More

HARANA
(differences)
It is a form of courtship during the older times. Involves a man singing a love song
to the girl. He's courting as she stares or listen by the window.
HARANA and BALITAW
(similarities)
Same example of secular music that became part of the cultural identities of the
Philippines.
BALITAW
(differences)
It is a type of folk song in Cebu; therefore, making it a Visayan song as well. Man
and woman compete at improvising romantic verse

Based on the musical characteristics of those songs, the musical instrument

use for these songs is Guitar, and the music ensemble is Rondalla. The main
instrument used for Harana is the guitar, played by the courter. The
traditional instrument also used to accompany the balitaw was a three- string
coconut-shell guitar.

What I have Learned

My Reflections
I had learned from the lesson on how to differentiate the characteristics of
harana and balitaw, distinguish the appropriate musical instruments and
ensemble to be used in accompanying harana and balitaw, and evaluate the
music and music performances of harana and balitaw by using the musical
elements/styles and its relation to its geographical background and culture.

Additional Activities

My Friend

I always thought you were the best

I guess I always will
I always thought that we were blessed
And I feel that way still

Cause when we were together

It made the dream come true
If I had only one friend left
I'd want it to be you

Someone who understands me

And knows me inside out
Helps keep me together
And believes without a doubt

That I could move a mountain

Someone to tell it to
If I had only one friend left
I'd want it to be you

And if I should ever go away

Well, then close your eyes and try
To feel the way we do today
And then if you can remember

Keep smiling, keep shining

Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times

I'll be on your side forever more

That's what friends are for
If I had only one friend left
I'd want it to be you
