appropriate PPE to their own personnel and subcontractors.

3 PROCEDURE
3.1 Compulsory standard personal protective equipment
The use of safety shoes, hard hats, safety glasses and high visibility vests/coveralls with reflective strips
is mandatory for all operational areas. The living arrangement (camp, guesthouse, vessel
accommodation, cabin, bridge, change room, washroom facilities etc.) and office areas are not being
considered as operational areas as long as no construction/maintenance activities are being executed in
these areas; if so the area must be cordoned off and the appropriate PPE must be worn. A coverall is
mandatory for all workers when exposed to sparks, splinters, dust and contamination by hazardous
substances.

3.2 Additional compulsory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Floating Device (PFD) – life jacket
The use of PFDs is mandatory when working above or on water or within 1.5 meters of the water’s edge
(if CPE is not in place). All PFDs must be:
 Appropriate for the task being conducted;
 In good serviceable condition;
 Of proper size for the intended wearer, sizing is taken by body weight and chest size.

Fall protection
Adequate fall protection is mandatory when working above 1.5 meters or within 3 meters of an edge (in
case of an excavation if it is deeper than 1.5 meters with a slope steeper than 30 degrees where
collective protection is not in place (barricade, guard rails etc.). For details on working at height reference
is made to DEME-QHSES-SOI-059.
A minimum of one lanyard is required and must be securely fastened to the fall harness. The lanyards
total expansion length must not exceed the height on which the work is performed. If need be, two
lanyards must be used to ensure that one is attached to a secure anchoring point at all times.
All lanyards must be secured to an adequate anchoring point at all times.
After a fall, all fall protection devices used must immediately be removed from use until they have been
inspected and approved by an inspection authority or competent person.

Additional mandatory PPE under specific circumstances and environments

When the risk of having an incident during the execution of a specific task (based on the performed site
risk assessment) cannot be reduced by elimination, substitution, safe design and/or collective protection
equipment to an acceptable level, additional PPE, such as safety gloves, ear protection, anti-fall
harnesses, face protection shields, dusk masks etc. are compulsory for the execution of these tasks.
The PPE matrix DEME-QHSES-DOC-161 gives an overview of mandatory PPE during the execution of
described activities. (Matrix is non-comprehensive and can be extended at all times.)

3.3 Training
All persons making use off any PPE when required shall be adequately trained in the use, maintenance
and inspection of the PPE required. If needed, additional training shall be given for additional PPE.

3.4 Personnel protective equipment for visitors

Visitors have to use the same PPE as DI personnel. The PPE such as PFD, hard hats, safety shoes and
safety glasses will be put at the disposal of the visitors. DI personnel that organizes visits or accompanies
visitors to the workplace should see to it that visitors are provided with the appropriate PPE.
