Examples of stresses transformation
2
Mohr-coulomb criterion
Mohr’s Circle Procedure- draw the circle
1. Draw the stress element aligned with original x, y axes. Show
the known stresses σxx, σyy, and τxy on the stress element
Compression is positive
Tension is negative
2. Draw the σ, τ axes for Mohr’s cicle with the τ positioning down.
3. Locate the center of circle
𝜎𝑥𝑥+𝜎𝑦𝑦
( , 0)
2
4. Locate the X point on the circle at (σxx, τxy)
5. Draw the circle passing thorough point X with center at point C.
The circle will pass through point Y (σyy, -τxy) 180 degree from
point X

Mohr-coulomb criterion (sign
convention)
Plotting positive shear stresses upward makes the angle 2θ
on the Mohr circle have a positive rotation clockwise, which is
opposite to the physical space convention. That is why some
authors prefer plotting positive shear stresses downward,
which makes the angle 2θ on the Mohr circle have a positive
rotation counterclockwise, similar to the physical space
convention for shear stresses.
Rule 1: If a shear on Plane-A2 is acting
in the positive X-direction, it is a positive
shear stress
Rule 2: If a shear on Plane-A2 is acting
in the negative X-direction, it is a
negative shear stress
Rule 3: The shear on Plane-B2 will be
opposite in sign to the shear on Plane-A 6

Mohr-coulomb criterion
• Draw new axes x’y’ rotated an angle θ counter-clock wise
from the xy axes on the stress element from step 1a above
• Find numerical values for the principle stresses, the
maximum shear stresses, and the angle α, from the xy axes
to the principle axes.
• Separate the angle θ into two parts: θ =α+β
• Calculate the new stresses
𝜎𝑥𝑥 + 𝜎𝑦𝑦
𝜎𝑥 ′ 𝑥 ′ = + 𝜏𝑚𝑎𝑥 cos(−2𝛽)
2
𝜎𝑥𝑥 + 𝜎𝑦𝑦
𝜎𝑦 ′ 𝑦 ′ = − 𝜏𝑚𝑎𝑥 cos(−2𝛽)
2
𝜏𝑥 ′ 𝑦 ′ = 𝜏𝑚𝑎𝑥 sin(−2𝛽)
• Points X’ and Y’ lie on the circle at an angle 2θ in the CCW
direction from point X and Y, respectively.

Stresses transformation
(Brain Stroming)
σ‘x=(σx+σy)/2+Cos(2θ)(σx-σy)/2+ τ xySin(2θ)
σ‘y=(σx+σy)/2-Cos(2θ)(σx-σy)/2- τ xySin(2θ)
τ'xy=-Sin(2θ)(σx-σy)/2+τxyCos(2θ)

Example #1
Add following 2-D stress
states, and find the principal
stresses and directions of
the resultant stress state.
Hint: Solve the problem graphically using a Mohr’s circle plot
11
Example #1 (solution)
Step 1
Draw xy and lm axes for the first stress state and then plot the
corresponding Mohr Circle
12
Example #1 (solution)
Step 2
The stresses transformed to the xy axes are then:
21.83 −1.83
𝑀𝑃𝑎
−1.83 8.17
13
Example #1 (solution)
Step 3
Draw xy and lm axes for the second stress state and then plot
the corresponding Mohr Circle
14
Example #1 (solution)
Step 4
The stresses transformed to the xy axes are then:
14.52 −1.17
𝑀𝑃𝑎
−1.17 20.48
15
Example #1 (solution)
Step 5
Adding the two xy stress states gives:
21.83 −1.83 14.52 −1.17 36.35 −3.00
[ ]+ =[ ]𝑀𝑃𝑎
−1.83 8.17 −1.17 20.48 −3.00 28.65
Step 6
Plotting the Mohr circle for combined stress state and reading
off the principal stresses and the principal direction give the
required values
