The ‘The Height of the Ridiculous’ is a humorous poem written by
the American poet Oliver Wendell Holmes. He was one of the Fireside
Poets and was famous as a comic lyricist. The rhyme scheme of each
stanza of the poem is abcb. The main gure of speech used is Irony
to create humour, including the very title of the poem. The poet uses
Hyperbole like the devil paying, waistband splitting, ve buttons
bursting off, and being wretched for ten days and nights. The poet’s
ridicule about how he decided to never write a humorous poem again
because he was extremely funny is the central idea of the poem. His
attempt to write one proved to be outrageous as it was so funny that
his servant laughed for almost ten days after reading it.

A.5. On an individual level, I can ensure that I do not unnecessarily 2
waste water in my daily routine and use it wisely. I can restrict the
usage of water for bathing, brushing, ushing, cleaning and other
daily activities. Also, one can initiate positive methods like rain water
harvesting in one’s building, house. We can ensure that we don’t
pollute the water bodies and keep them clean.

Water Conservation – The need of the hour
Man has taken water for granted as it is a free commodity. And the

rate of water conservation will result in its exhaustion. Therefore, the


World Bank proposes a water tariff according to its availability and
use in a particular region. The present cost of water to industries and
agriculture is too low. The water conference should be taken seriously
and the policy makers and opinion leaders should think about those
regions where water is scarce as also about water pollution. Production
cost would be affected by the tariff but the funds should be used for
development of technology to harvest water.

variety of platforms available, everyone’s preferences differ greatly.
Facebook tops the chart of favourites at a leading 26 %. However,
nearly 16 % users prefer YouTube over the other platforms. On the
other hand, both Skype and Instagram are chosen as favourites by
14 % users. Some 13 % of the populace considers Twitter as the best
media platform. Snapchat is trailing at a mere 12 %. And lastly, only

B.1 ‘Simi had always believed that every good deed, no how big or 5
small, makes all the difference in the world...’
• A new girl had joined her class after summer and as she was an
outsider everyone made fun of her and bullied her.
• Simi felt terrible for the poor girl. She would stand up for her and
ask people to leave her alone.
• She would also make sure that her new classmate was doing well.
They weren’t really friends but Simi would always help out the new
kid. They lost contact after school.
• After many years Simi received an enclosed envelope, it read that
the classmate she had helped all along had passed away due to
cancer. She had written a letter to thank Simi stating that she
wanted Simi to know that she was the only one helping her keep
everything together even when everything was so difcult around
her. It would not have mattered a lot to Simi, but it made all the
difference in her classmate’s life.

• I had been promising my grandma that I would take her to the
doctor since over a month. I kept delaying it and would laze around
the house watching movies and playing games as I found going to
hospital very boring.
• My grandma fell very sick all of a sudden due to neglect of her
health.
• I felt terribly guilty and regretted my behaviour greatly. I promised
to always be there for my grandma and would take care of her. I
realized the importance of doing things on time and I made it a
point never to be lazy again.


