Introduction to Sweater Industries of Bangladesh
Sweater, a sub-sector of the apparel sector, has seen a sharp growth in the last
fiscal year, thanks to prolonged winter in the western world. According to latest
data of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), in the fiscal year 2017-18, Bangladesh
earned $3.67 billion, which is 9.32% higher compared to the $3.36 billion it earned
in FY16-17 in sweater export. Sweater has contributed 11.98% to overall
readymade garment exports of $30.62 billion. In the Fiscal Year 2017-18,
Bangladesh’s export earnings from the apparel sector have seen an 8.76% growth
to 30.61 billion. While, the country’s total, exports earnings rose to $36.66 billion
in the same period. Bangladesh, the second largest exporter of clothing products,
has a huge opportunity in increasing exports of sweater products, as it is upgrading
technology. While the global demand is increasing due to expanded winter in the
Western world. On top of that, Bangladesh offers quality products at an affordable
price. These have pushed the export earnings from the sector up.
The newly sweater industry emerged from Evance Group of companies in the year
1998 as one of the best quality sweater manufacturers. Apart from sweater
manufacturing business we run a garment buying & trading house. The company is
in a position to open Back to Back L/C for import of yarn and raw materials within
a couple of days form the date of receipt of Master L/C for execution of the Export
orders. So far we have been working with different foreign buyers of USA, Italy,
France, Germany, UK, Holland & Denmark to feed back our own manufacturing unit
Evance Accessories Ltd and planning to split orders to our associate industries.

playing important role in sweater industry

Sweater Items Consumption
As we have seen normally in case of knitted items and woven items, by using solid
fabric or finished fabric all types of knitted and woven items can be made. But in
case of sweater garments, we haven’t seen anything as like that. No solid or
finished fabrics are available here. By linking one yarn with another, the shape of
the sweater parts are made. As a result, there is no available fabric consumption
calculation method as woven or knit items. In case of sweater garments,
consumption can be calculated depending on the quantity of yarns needed to make
a sweater garment.
Example:
Suppose,
Buyer provides you a sample by mentioning the below information-
Yarn: 100% Acrylic, 2/36”S, 2ply
Sample Weight: 180gm
Knitting: 12 G/G, (2×2) Rib
Specifications: Plain knit placket, Slit, 2 pockets.
Now prepare the yarn consumption of the above sweater item.
Solution:
Buyer provided sample weight- 180gm
Merchandiser made sample weight-190gm
Let, buyer approved the sample weight and style according to measurement chart.
Now,
Yarn needed per dozen garments = (190 × 12) = 2280gm= 5.03lb (1lb= 453.6gm)
In case of acrylic yarn, wastage% is 5-7%.
So, after adding wastage% total quantity of yarn needed per dozen garments is-,
= 5.03 + 6% (here, we accept 6% wastage)
= 5.33lbs per dozen
So, Yarn needed per dozen garments is 5.33lbs.
For costing of sweater, we need to make a sample first as per requirement style,
measurement & weight. It is the wise to make the sample following middle size of
buyer spec. Then weight that sweater & multiple the weights with 12 pcs to know
the weight of per dozen sweaters. Then add wastage percentage (generally we
calculate 10-20% wastage based on styling). Generally, we can see different types
of gauge like as 3GG, 5GG, 7GG, 12 GG. After read this article you can easily
understand costing of sweater.
Given
1 .weight 200gm per gmts (2 ply)
2.Yarn: 100% Acrylic, 2/36s
3.Types of Gauges: 12 GG
First of all, we know that yarn cost formula is as below
Yarn cost=Yarn consumption in LBS +wastage X Yarn Price in Lbs.
And, also costing formula as below
Costing=(Yarn consumption in lbs+ wastage)X Yarn price in Lbs+ Accessories cost
+Print cost+ embroidery cost+ CM+ washing cost + commercial charge+ profit.
We can assume per dozen price in the following.
Yarn price per Ibs=$3.10
Accessories cost (zipper, Button, finishing) =$4.00
Print cost per dozen=$1.50
Embroidery cost per dozen=$ 2.00
Cost of making (CM)=$17.00
Washing cost per dozen=$3.00
Commercial cost per dozen=$1.00
Before costing we have to calculate yarn cost per dozen.
=(Yarn consumption in LBS +wastage) X Yarn Price in Lbs.
=200 gm per gmts (we assume 10%wastage)
=220 gm
Now we calculate per dozen
=220gm X12
As a sub sector of RMG sector sweater industries have some problems, low skill,
poor management, insufficient infrastructure, inefficient machinery, are the main
Problem for the sweater sector .Besides this the following problems are as follows
:
1. The main problem of sweater industries in Bangladesh is paid low wage of the
workers. Garment industries owner never provides perfect wages to the workers.
2. Electricity problem is another problem of sweater industries of Bangladesh. It
hampers production process. It also reduces production.
3. Increasing price of raw materials is another problem for garments industries of
Bangladesh. Raw materials are imported by high tax. It is a vital problem for
sweater industries of Bangladesh.
4. Employees of sweater industries are not well trained. There is no training system
for sweater workers in Bangladesh. It is a vital problem to sweater industries of
Bangladesh.
5. Lack of stable and long-term policy to ensure the business-friendly atmosphere
in the country and shortage of planning for expanding new market
Prospects of sweater industries of Bangladesh
There are huge possibilities of the sweater sector in Bangladesh. Sweater industry
of Bangladesh has a great opportunity to become a major sector of the national
economy. As we know that availability of a lower labor cost in Bangladesh to helps
the garment industry to secure a very strong position in the world. These are below:
1. As a Least Development Country (LDC) Bangladesh has duty free access to global
market for sweater products.
2. Bangladeshi sweater products are being exported different countries. Its export
is increasing worldwide gradually.
3.Bangladeshi sweater industry is very much capable to ensure proper quality of
the product asper requirement of the global buyers of the international sweater
market.
4.Increasing labor cost all over the world. However, Bangladeshi sweater sector
labor cost is comparatively cheap; as a result Bangladeshi sweater products may
be fulfilled global demand.
Conclusion
Bangladesh is the best placed for sweater industry due to cheap labor & favorable
trade status. Bangladesh has earned nearly $8 billion by exporting garment
products, mainly to Europe and the United States. After all this analysis I can Say
that as a sub-sector of RMG, Sweater Industry can be the major earning sector of
garments sector.
