Lesson 3 Assignment

Use the information that you have learned from this lesson to analyze a leader as well as
followers. Watch the First Follower video (listed in course), and answer the following questions:

1. What leadership traits and/or styles did you observe about the ‘leader’ in the
video?
(Consider what you have learned so far about trait theories, motivation, Maslow’s
Hierarchy of Needs, Participative leadership, and followership)

I notice bravery, persistence, and motivation. The leader was brave enough to stand out
from the crowd and lead a dance when no one else around was dancing. He didn’t give
up, but instead he waited for others to join in. He also motivated his first follower to keep
dancing and invite others to join. Relating this to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the self-
actualization came from the leader himself, but then the belongingness and esteem needs
came from the followers once they joined in.

2. What did you observe about the first follower? And the second follower? The rest?

The first follower was the most important one, he gave the crowd motivation as well to
join in. The second follower really got the rest of the followers to come because once
there are more than two people, it is suddenly a crowd and no one feels alone anymore.

3. How did the leader and the follower(s) influence one another?

The leader influenced them by standing out and not caring what others thought about
him. A leader needs to have the bravery to take chances even when no one else is taking
them. The followers influenced the leader to keep dancing and once there was a crowd it
gave him self-esteem to keep going and being a leader in scenarios like this one.

4. If the first follower had not acted, would the leader have been successful? Explain.

I am not sure if the leader would have been successful if the first follower had not acted.
There were a couple moments where no one else was joining him, and I don’t think that
anyone else would have been brave enough to join him if the first follower hadn’t joined.
This is because the first follower and the leader contain something that a lot of others
don’t, and that’s bravery and self-confidence.

Finally, assess you own motivational needs:

5. What factors motivate you most to be an effective leader? Consider the list of
