Organize yourself during the course. Remember that, although we will analyze and
describe all the accents that appear in the syllabus, we will only evaluate you for 3
accents in the final exam:
 RP
 GA
 Another accent of your choice:

o Welsh English
o Scottish English
o Southern Irish English
o Australian English
o South African English
o West Indian English

You do not have to communicate your decision until the day of the final exam
in which you will have to tick the accent of your choice…

Notice that those accents considered ‘optional’ in the syllabus, namely Northern Irish
English, New Zealand English and Indian English, WILL NOT be evaluated in the
final exam. In a course of this nature we cannot study all accents but at least we offer
information about them for those students who wish to study them voluntarily .

Familiarize yourself with all the key elements of the virtual course:

 File Storage: Folder containing the main learning material in the

subfolder called Units, the recordings of the online sessions, the
audio files (for the practice exercises), extra transcription challenges,
additional phonetic information as well as previous exams.

 Forums: Communication tools to get in contact with your tutor(s) and the
rest of your classmates.

 Intercampus Webconferences (also called Online Sessions): There

will be online sessions mainly related to the key eight accents analysed
in the course. These sessions will be conducted by the tutors, and you
can attend live, or listen to their recording later on.

/ Be aware that most of the key contents you will have to study (called units) will
be uploaded gradually in the virtual course to help you with an adequate work plan.
Only a few topics will be studied from the book by Trudgill & Hannah.

Check the calendar to know when they will be available!

When dealing with a specific unit:

materials, learning outcomes, etc.) in that unit from the Guía Completa.

(books, articles, websites, etc.) which can be followed up if you have
interest in a given topic or wish to pursue it in greater depth.
 Practical exercises with answers, highly recommended self-
evaluation activities to assist you to apply the knowledge and insights
gained from reflection or reading. They aim at encouraging you to
relate what you have learned to your own teaching/learning situation.
They mainly include Ear Training, Transcription Practice, Oral
Production exercises. Hint: If you have problems with the audio files
shown in the pdf practical documents, go to File Storage: Audio Files.

 Review Exercises to evaluate your progress at the end of each unit.
 Further Practice, in all units, except nº 1, there are additional
exercises for those students who want to analyze other linguistic areas
of the varieties, such as grammar or vocabulary.

Keep in mind that this year the PEC is a mid-term summative task containing a
transcription-description exercise of a sample of one of the accents analysed to date:

 For those students who decide to take the PEC, it will have a value of 20%
of the final grade (2 points out of 10), with the remaining 80% coming from
the final written exam mark.

 For those who decide not to take the PEC, the final mark will come
exclusively from that obtained in the final written exam. They can pass the
course but with a maximum grade of 8.

Remember that students are divided in virtual groups and assigned a tutor.
He/she will monitor your progression during the course until the final written exam,
being responsible of:

 Answering your academic questions/doubts in your group forum

 Correcting and marking PECs
 Conducting intercampus online sessions and taking over the
corresponding online session forums
