Well Control
• Barrier definition: any device, fluid, or substance that prevents flow of
wellbore fluids
• Barrier Classification:
• Primary
• Secondary
• Tertiary
• Barrier Requirement
• Drilling & Workover – Double Barrier protection
• Well Intervention – Triple Barrier protection
• Pressure barrier: Mechanical with full containment of pressure, preventing
release of fluid and tested in the direct of flow
• Flow Barrier: Mechanical constrain to the rate of flow of fluid
• Permanent Barrier: Closed and prohibits any flow without any further
action.
• Passive Barrier: Normally open but can be closed
• Barrier Envelopes: Group of individual barrier elements (i.e. Stuffing box is
part of lubricator envelopes, Xmas Tree is part of Tubing packer envelopes,
Casing is part of production Casing envelopes, Etc.)
Barrier Envelopes
Barrier type Barrier Integrity
Mechanical Must be "tested from directional flow"
Stuffing
X-Tree 1. Closed Type Must be "Leak Thight"
Box
API Leakage Criteria "400 cc/min or 900
2. Closeable Type scf/hr"

Hydrostatic Barrier Must be diligent monitoring for period

Wellhead & X-Tree
• API Specification 6A is the recognized
industry standard for wellhead and
tree equipment. It was formulated to
provide safe, dimensionally and
functionally interchangeable wellhead
and tree equipment. The specification
includes detailed requirements for
manufacturing tubular well.
suspension equipment, valves, and
fittings used at oil and gas well
locations to contain and control
pressure and fluid flow.
Wellhead & X-Tree
Definition:
• All permanent equipment between the
uppermost position of the surface casing
and the tubing head adapter connection
Function:
• Support/suspend the casings and tubing.
• Provides a seal between the different
strings (annulus sealing).
• Allow for access to annuli between the
different casing/tubing strings.
• Provides support for BOP during drilling.
• It is foundation for attaching at reef or well
• Control during production, injection, or
other operations.
• It provides access to the well.

Wellhead & X-Tree
Definition:
• Christmas tree is the assembly of gate valves,
chokes and fitting which control the flow of oil & gas
during production.
Function:
• The primary function of a tree is to control the flow
into or out of the well, usually oil or gas.
• The bottom connection of the tree matches the top
connection to the tubing head adapter
• The tree and adapter are generally installed as a
unit, immediately after tubing is suspended.
• Christmas trees are assembled in sizes, pressures,
trims and configurations designed to meet virtually
any completion and production requirements
• Most trees feature gate valves and chokes.

Annular Pressure
Definition: “the area between two concentric circles” or
a ring sharped part, figure or space”
• The annular voids from the principles barriers between
the production fluid and the athmosphere
• By monitoring the annulus pressure we are able to
assess the condition of integrity of wellbore tubular
• Anomalous annulus pressure may give the first
indication of downhole problems although it does’t
automatically mean there is a leak
• Thermal expansion or ingress of formation fluid could
also cause an increase in annulus pressure, regular
sampling of annulus fluid may also be undertaken

SAP (Sustainable Annulus
Pressure)
Definition: a pressure in any well annulus that is measurable at the
wellhead and rebuilds when bleed down, not caused solely by
temperature fluctuation or imposed by the operator
SAP US Regulation: diagnostic testing is required in any well
exhibiting SAP, result of the test if immediate SAP removal could be
temporary waived and continuing operation of well permit
Norsok D-10: Pressure in all accessible annuli shal be monitored and
maintained within min and max operational pressure limits to verify
the integrity status of well barriers is known at all times
A-annulus pressure in all wells and B-annulus pressure in multi
purpose and gas lifted wells shall be monitored through continuous
recording
Subsea wells, the B-annulus designed to withstand thermal
pressure build up, or have an acceptable pressure management
system
Possible Leak Patch - Completion
1. Tubing hanger seal
2. SC-SSCV (Where Fitted)
3. Control/Balance Line
4. Connections
5. Tubing
6. Gas lift Mandrels
7. Expansion Joints
8. Production packer Seal
Note:
Where the liner is lap above packer, the
liner lap can also be a failure patch
Leak Patch – A Annulus
1. Casing hanger Seal – Leak into B-
Annulus
2. Casing Leak – Either connections
of loss of integrity to / from B-
Annulus
3. Casing Leak – Connections of loss
of integrity resulting to the
formation / reservoir
communication
4. Cement bond failure reslting in

other formation
Leak Patch – B Annulus

/ from C-Annulus
2. Casing Hanger Leak – either
connections of loss of integrity
to / from C-Annulus
3. Shoe failure – leak to / from
