CLOSING DR PACKS

PREPARING A
STERILE FIELD
OPENING OF STERILE PACKAGES/
ADDING AND POURING OF STERILE
MATERIALS
THE PROCEDURE
STEP 1
Perform proper
handwashing.
STEP 2
Choose a flat, dry,
hard surface on
which to prepare a
sterile field.
STEP 3
The wrapper of
sterilized objects, when
opened, provides a
sterile field.
STEP 4
When opening a sterile
package (drapes or
gowns), grasp only the
outside edge of the
wrapper.
STEP 5
Open the far flap first,
then the side flaps and FAR PART FROM YOU
finally the closest to you.

STEP 6
The item can be turned,
or you can turn around.
STEP 7
As you add items
place them well within
the sterile field.
STEP 8
In adding a sterile material
(instrument), unwrap the
item as for any sterile
package, gather the ends of
the covering back around
your wrist, forming a sterile
cover for your hand, and
keep the ends from dangling
closely.
STEP 9
Content can be put
down or dropped by a
circulating nurse or
lifted upward by a
scrub nurse.
STEP 10
When opening sterile
commercial packages
(i.e. gloves), flaps
should be pulled
back, not torn, to
expose the contents.
STEP 11
The contents should not
be permitted to slide
over the edges. The
inner edge of the heat
seal is considered the
line of demarcation
between sterile and
unsterile.
STEP 12
Contents can be flipped
or lifted upward by
gloved hands of the
scrub nurse or picked
up by a sterile picking
forceps held by the
circulating nurse.
Take note of
proper way
of assisting in
giving
SCRUB NURSE
instruments CIRCULATING NURSE
inside the
delivery or
operating
room.
STEP 13
Small items may be
dropped from 6-8
inches above the 6-8 INCHES
sterile field: large
items should be put
down carefully; or you
can use sterile forceps.
STEP 14
When adding
liquids, pour a
small amount of
solution into a
waste receptacle.
STEP 15
Pour it from 6-8
inches above the
receiving bin. 6-8 INCHES
STEP 16
Pour slowly
without
splashing.
CLOSING OF
STERILE PACKS
THE PROCEDURE
STEP 1
In closing the DR pack, the
inner wrapper is closed
first. The side near the
nurse is folded inward first,
then the sides, and lastly
the side far from the nurse.
STEP 2
The outer wrapper
is then closed, same
manner done as
with the inner
wrapper.
STEP 3
Do after care bring
package to working
area. Remove sharp
objects and wastes and
dispose to appropriate
areas. Drop soiled
package in hamper. PUNCTURED PROOF
HAMPER
STEP 4
Wash instruments
and soak in
disinfecting
solution. Wash
hands thoroughly.
