Self-Assessment of NBPTS

Directions: For each element, rate yourself in one of the following three categories. Then provide examples of your experiences in the
area of the NBPTS. Finally, identify areas within each domain where you are interested in growing. On the last page, summarize your
strengths and areas of possible growth. Boxes will expand as needed.
• Exploring/Emerging (E/E) - a level of practice in which the teacher relies on ongoing assistance from more experienced colleagues for
support, guidance, and survival. The teacher is moving toward becoming more self-directed and independent in her/his practice.
• Applying (A) - a level of practice in which the teacher is able to provide independent instruction and easily applies what s/he has
learned about educational practice.
• Integrating/Innovating (I/I) - a level of development in which the teacher is fully skilled and confident. The Integrating/Innovating
teacher is contributing to the broader educational community through staff development, research, or publication in professional
journals.

Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and their learning. E/E A I/I

curriculum and pacing to make sure I am meeting
students at their level.

them an opportunity to advocate for their needs.
• 1.4: I have students set new goals for themselves
at the start of each new semester. While they can
set academic goals, they can also set goals that
transcend the English curriculum.

Proposition 2: Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to

students.
5. Teachers Appreciate How Knowledge in Their Subjects is Created, Organized, and Linked to Other
Disciplines
6. Teachers Command Specialized Knowledge of How to Convey a Subject to Students
7. Teachers Generate Multiple Paths to Knowledge
Three Examples of Proposition 2 Experiences Areas of Interest in Growth

instruction whenever possible. For example, I often
link history to background information in our novel
studies, and I incorporate math into my career 2.3: I hope to continue to find more instuctional strategies to

activities and strategies into my lessons. During
distance-learning, this is has been more
challenging, but I have found ways to do this by
using breakout rooms, collaborative Google Docs,

students more involved in the learning process. Online
• 3.3: I involve students in the feedback process. For

• 3.4: I aim to assess students multiple times
throughout each lesson to check for
understanding. I like to use think-pair-shares, exit

Proposition 4: Teachers think systematically about their practices and learn from experience. E/E A I/I
1. Teachers Make Difficult Choices That Test Their Professional Judgment
2. Teachers Use Feedback and Research to Improve Their Practice and Positively Impact Student Learning
Three Examples of Proposition 4 Experiences Areas of Interest in Growth

help me make strategic planning decisions (due to
reduced number of instructional days).
• 4.2: I attended a professional development

emotional learning into my everyday English 4.2: I hope to continue to learn more about ways to support

Summary of Strengths and Areas of Possible Growth

Strenghths Summary: After reviewing my examples, it seems my strenths lie in propostion one and propsotion three. I am
very commited to student learning and I want to see my students succeed. I try my best to differentiate my instruction, get
to know my students, and connect my lessons to larger life skills. Propostion three focuses on managing and monitoring
student learning. I strive to make my lessons as engaging as possible for students, including several asssessments
throughout the lesson. While I think routines are great, I also try to make sure that I use a vareity of different instructional
strategies in my lessons to give students multiple methods to show what they know. I hope to continue to build on these
skills this semester.
Areas for Growth Summary: Similar to the Teacher Leader domains, I have a lot of room for improvement when it comes
to the NBPTS standards. A pattern among all five propostiions is the desire to learn more about ways I can support
students. I strive to find ways to make my lessons inclusive, accessible, and engaging for my diverse popultation of
learners. I think I will be able to refine my skills by colloborating with my colleagues, attending professional development
workshops, and conducting my own research into resources that are available. Another big area for improvement is within
propostion five, specifically working with families. As a high school teacher, I find parent engagement to be lower than I
would like. I hope to find ways that I can better connect with families and the school community as a whole.
