Course Objectives:
This course intends to teach fundamental concepts of power electronics, various semiconductor devices, their construction, operation, Static & dynamic
characteristics and applications.

Basic Electrical Engineering, Analog & Digital Electronic circuits

Module I Power semiconductor Devices
Introduction to power electronics, Study of switching devices (Construction and working) -

Power Diodes, SCR, TRIAC, MOSFET, IGBT, Static and dynamic characteristics of Power Diode, SCR, MOSFETs,
IGBT. Series and parallel operation of devices and their protection.
Module II Commutation and Choppers
Commutation techniques: Load commutation(Class A), Resonant-Pulse commutation (class B), impulse commutation
(class D), Line Commutation (class F), complementary commutation. 20
Choppers:Principle of step down chopper, Step-down chopper with RL load, Principle of step-up chopper, Chopper
Classification (single, two and four quadrant) choppers.
Module III Phase controlled Converter circuits
Single phase half wave controlled rectifier with resistive and inductive loads, effect of freewheelingdiode.Single phase
fully controlled and half controlled bridge converters. Performance Parameters Three phase half wave converters, three 30
phase fully controlled and half controlled bridge converters, Effect of source impedance, Single phase and three phase
dual converters
Module IV AC-AC Converters and Inverters 30
Principle of on-off control and phase control, Single phase Bi- directional
controllers with resistive loads, Principle of cyclo-converter operation, single phase cycloconverter.
Inverters: Introduction to inverter. Operating principle and performance parameters, voltage source,current source,
bridge inverter, Voltage control of Single-Phase Inverters, PWM methodsingle pulse width, multiple pules-width, and
sinusoidal pulse width. Three-phase Inverters-180 degree and 120 degree conduction.

4. Study & execution of Single phase half wave rectifier using R and R-L loads.

7. Speed control of Universal motor using AC voltage controller.
8. Study & execution of Single phase to Single phase Cycloconverter.
