The document discusses installing an Electrical Load Sensing Device (ELSD) on Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer Actuators (THSA) to detect engagement of the Secondary Load Path (SLP) and provide this information to flight control computers.

The purpose of installing the ELSD is to detect when the Secondary Load Path (SLP) of the THSA is engaged/loaded on the upper attachment as a result of a failure of the Primary Load Path.

The main components of the ELSD are two instrumented axes with sensitive elements, a spring box, and integrated electronics. The sensitive elements detect loading and the electronics disrupt the electrical signal to indicate SLP engagement above a defined threshold.

SERVICE BULLETIN
FLIGHT CONTROLS - TRIMMABLE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER ACTUATOR (THSA)
INSTALLATION OF AN ELECTRICAL LOAD SENSING DEVICE (ELSD)

1. Planning information.
A. Effectivity.
(1) This Service Bulletin concerns Trimmable Horizontal
Stabilizer Actuator (THSA) 47145-XXX.
B. Concurrent requirements.
Not applicable.
C. Reason.

Installation of an Electrical Load Sensing Device (ELSD) to detect

when the Secondary Load Path (SLP) of the THSA is engaged/loaded
on upper attachment as a result of a failure of the Primary Load
Path.
D. Description (Refer to CMM 27-44-51).

The Electrical Load Sensing Device (ELSD) will replace the two
attaching bolts (5-140) holding the SLP to the aircraft frame and
will detect the secondary load path (SLP) engagement/loading and
will provide the information to the flight control computers.
Detailed description of the Electrical Load Sensing Device
(ELSD).
(1) Two instrumented axis with 2 sensitive elements on each.
(2) Sensitive elements are button on a membrane with a strain
gauge bounded under.
(3) Load measurements are made by physical contact between A/C
SLP parts and sensitive elements.
(4) A spring box allows to keep a fix axial load whatever the
torque on the nuts is.
(5) An integrated electronic onto the back housing of the
instrumented axis will detect the loading of the SLP at
defined threshold.
(6) In case of load detection the ELSD will disrupt the electrical
signal of the THSA monitoring RVDT1 by shortening-circuit its
outputs.

Record the offset (voltage measured between pin 3 and 4
of the BIT test connector) at a temperature of 20)C (68)F)
after a minimum period of 1.5 hour and record data which
must be between 2.45 to 2.55 VDC.
2 BIT test.
Remove the BIT plug from the BIT test connector and record
the impedance between main connector pins 1 and 10 (RVDT
1) and between main connector pins 3 and 4 (RVDT 2) (BIT
function ON).
Install the BIT plug to the BIT test connector and record
the impedance between main connector pins 1 and 10 (RVDT1)
