Problem 1
In the connection shown (refer to the figure). Two clip angles (thickness 𝑡𝐶 = 9.5 mm) are fastened to an
upper support by bolts 1 and 2 each with a diameter of 12 mm; each bolt has a washer with a diameter of
𝑑𝑤 = 28 mm. The main part of the hanger is attached to the clip angles by a single bolt (bolt 3 in the figure)
with a diameter of 𝑑 = 25 mm. The hanger has a rectangular cross section with a width of 𝑏1 = 38 mm and
thickness of 𝑡 = 13 mm, but at the bolted connection, the hanger is enlarged to a width of 𝑏2 = 75 mm.
a. Determine the tensile load P in the hanger if based only on the allowable tensile stress in the
main part of the hanger is “1ab” MPa.
b. Determine the tensile load P if based only on the allowable bearing stress between the hanger
and the shank of bolt 3 is “1ef” MPa.
c. Determine the tensile load P if based only on the allowable shear stress in bolt 3 is “4f” MPa.

d. Determine the tensile load P if based only the allowable bearing stress between the washer
and the clip angle at either bolt 1 or 2 is “6f” MPa.
e. Determine the tensile load P if based only the allowable shear stress through the clip angle at
bolts 1 and 2 is “3c” MPa.
Problem 2
In the figure shown, the diameter of members AB, BC, CD, DE, BE and AG is 12 mm and the rest of the members
have a diameter of 15 mm.
P = “de” kN

Problem 3
Determine the normal and shear stress on the inclined plane. [5 pts each].
Problem 4
Determine the safe value of W that can be supported by the two wires AB and AC. The working stresses are 100
MPa for AB and 150 MPa for AC. The cross-sectional areas of AB and AC are 200 mm2 and 400 mm2, respectively.
