Elementary Japanese I-B

Lesson 3 (Week 11-15)
How to tell the Time, Days of the Week, Sentence conjugation of
Past/Present

MY JOURNEY

Time is a precious resource and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. From over scheduling and
constantly being plugged in, to completely dropping out of the rat race, everyone is looking to
maximize the time they have left on earth. After all, there’s only so many hours in the day.

The Japanese people believe that time is gold and they are known as very punctual when it
comes to class, meetings or any gathering. It is the rule of the thumb to arrive five minutes before
the meeting time. Speaking of time, Japan is one of the few countries which experiences the beauty
of the four seasons, the fresh scent of Spring, the heat of the Summer, the crisp air of Fall and the
coldness of Winter.
In this module, you will learn the different ways on how to tell the time, the days of the
week, and the conjugation of the past and present tenses.

MY TARGET
Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to:

a. Differentiate the days of the week.

b. Know the different basic vocabularies that is useful in formulating sentences.
c. Evaluate the conjugations of the verb tenses.
d. Appreciate the different cultural holidays and compare it to Philippine
holidays.

Sentence Patterns and Grammar

Page | 5
1. ここ・そこ・あそこ・こちら・そちら・あちら

● The demonstratives ここ, そこ, and あそこ refer to PLACES.

● ここ indicates the place where the speaker is standing.
● そこ refers the place where the listener is.
● あそこ refers to the place far from both the speaker and listener.
● こち, そちら, and あちら refer to DIRECTION and can also be used as the polite
alternative for ここ, そこ, and あそこ.
Note: When the speaker and listener is in the same place, it is designated by ここ, and in
this situation, そこ refers to the place where the both of them is slightly distant and あそ
こ refers to somewhere even further from the both of them.
(Refer to the picture on the right)
2. ここ は しょくどう です。 This is the cafeteria.

● Using the sentence pattern, N + は + PLACE + です, you can state where a place,
thing or person is.

Example: おてあらい は あそこ です。

The toilet is over there.

3. どこ・どちら

● どこ is used for asking “Where?” and どちら for “Which direction?”

● どちら can also be used for asking “Where?”, in which case is politer than どこ.
● どこ and どちら are also used for asking the name of the country, company,
school or other place or organization to which someone belongs.
● なん cannot be used in this case.
● どちら is the polite form of どこ.

Example: がっこう は どこ です か。 What school do you go to?

4. これは どこ の コンピュター ですか。 Where is this computer made? /
What company made this computer?

。。。にほん の コンピュータ です。 It’s made in Japan.

。。。IECC の コンピュータ です。 It’s made by IECC.

● The pattern for the sentence above is: N1 + の + N2

● When N1 is the name of the country and N2 is the name of the product, it means
that N2 is made in that country.

Example: 。。。N1 にほん の N2 コンピュータ です。

Page | 6
● When N1 is the name of a company and N2 is the name of a product, it means that
N2 is made by that company.

Example: 。。。N1 IECC の N2 コンピュータ です。

You’ve learned in the previous lesson about the different kinds of demonstratives used in
the sentences and I bet you’re confused which is which but don’t worry because we’re
gonna break it down one by one.

Time

Clocks have existed in Japan since the mid-7th century AD in the form of
water clocks.
The Nihon Shoki states that Emperor Tenchi made a water clock, or rōkoku in 660
and 671. These clocks were used for another 800 years until the arrival of Christianity in
Japan in the 16th century.
Christian missionaries were among the first to introduce Japan to Western-styled
clocks. Francis Xavier, a Spanish Society of Jesus saint and missionary, gave Ouchi Yoshitaka,
a daimyō of the Sengoku period, a mechanical clock in 1551. Other missionaries and
embassies soon followed, with a mechanized clock being given to Oda Nobunaga in 1569
and Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1571 by Papal envoys, and two clocks given to Tokugawa Ieyasu,
one in 1606 by a missionary and one in 1611 by a Portuguese envoy. The oldest surviving
western clock in Japan dates back to 1612; it was given to Shōgun Ieyasu by the viceroy of
Mexico (then New Spain).

Sentence Pattern and Grammar Notes

1. いま + ーじ +ーふん +です。

● This sentence pattern is used to express time.

● The counter suffixes ーじ (o’clock) and ーふん (minutes) are placed after the
numbers.
● ーふん is used after the numbers 2, 5, 7, 9 and ーぷん after 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10.

Page | 20
● 1, 6, 8, and 10 are read with the small tsu (sukuon) e.g. ippun, roppun, happon, and
jyuuppon
● To ask the time, なん is placed in front of じ or ぷん.
● In this case, the particle は is not used.

● It is also used when a sentence expresses a behavior or event that will occur in the
future.
● The table below shows its negative and past-tense forms.

Non-Past (future/present) Past

Affirmative おきます (I [will] wake up) おきました ( I woke up)

2. あした 6じ に おきます。 I’m going to wake up at six tomorrow.
3. けさ 6じ に おきました。 I woke up at six this morning.
● Verb question sentences are formed by putting the particle か at end of the

● When using an interrogative, this is placed in the part of the sentence that the
speaker wants to talk about.

Example: 1. きのう (V)べんきょうしました か。 。。はい、(V)べんきょうしま

した。
Did you study yesterday? . Yes, I did. [study]
。。いいえ、(V) べんきょうしませんでした。
