MODULE 2 UNIT 3

INCHEM 211L 9:30 – 8:30 MWF 0589 EXPERIMENT OBSERVATIONS

A. PREPARATION OF OXYGEN

Why can hydrogen be collected by water displacement?

Hydrogen is collected by downward displacement of water as it is less dense than water. Hence it comes
out at the surface of water. It is insoluble in water so it does not dissolve in water._

Why are the first bubbles allowed to escape?

Because they contain air mixed with the gas. Air mixed with hydrogen forms an explosive mixture.

Why are the test tubes of hydrogen kept with their mouths downward?

Because hydrogen  is lighter than air, when the  Hydrogen  gas starts filling, then it goes to the very
bottom of the  test tube, since it is lighter and displaces the air from above down.

What is the chemical equation for the preparation of hydrogen?

__________Zn + H2SO4 = ZnSO4 + H2_______________________________________________

B. PROPERTIES OF HYDROGEN

1. List down the physical properties of hydrogen.

Color: ___Colorless__________ Odor: ________Odorless_________

Taste: ______Tasteless________ Density (compared to air): _ 14.5 times lighter than air._

2. Open a test tube of hydrogen gas and insert a burning splinter in the mouth of the test tube.

What is the result?

When the burning splinter was inserted in the mouth of the test tube of hydrogen gas it created a
popping sound.

Will pure hydrogen gas give the same result?

Pure hydrogen gas will not give the same result for it needed a correct mixture of oxygen in order to explode or
pop even at small amount.

With what kind of flame does pure hydrogen burn?

_____ Pale blue flame_______________________________________________________

What is the chemical equation for the burning of hydrogen?

_______________2 H2+ O2→2 H2O__________________________________________

3. Invert an empty test tube over a test tube of hydrogen gas and hold them mouth to mouth for several seconds.
Prepare 2 burning splints and thrust them at the same time to each tube.

What is the result?

____ there is popping sound produce only from the test tube with hydrogen gas ______________

What property of hydrogen is shown by this result?

_____Hydrogen is a combustible gas_________________________________________________

Define this property.

The hydrogen is a light element and is extremely flammable. Flammable applies to materials that ignite
more easily than other materials, and thus are more dangerous and more highly regulated.

4. Reducing property of hydrogen.

Define Reduction.

Reduction involves a half-reaction in which a chemical species decreases its oxidation number, usually by
gaining electrons. The other half of the reaction involves oxidation, in which electrons are lost.

Illustrate with equation the reduction of cupric oxide.

_____ CuO  + H2  → Cu + H2O_________________________________________________________

C. FURTHER PREPARATION OF HYDROGEN

1. Action of Active Metals on Water

What is the result?

____ a vigorous reaction takes place upon dropping the sodium metal into the water. a pink color is
formed as the metal reacts with the water___

What is the chemical equation for the reaction of sodium metal with water?

______ 2Na  +  2H2O  –>  2NaOH  +  H2  ______________________________

Name two other metals that react with water at ordinary temperature.

______Potassium and Calcium____________________________________________________________

2. Action of Less Active Metals on Water

What is the result?

The reaction increse when the sample is heated, it forms bubbles or steam and turns purple over
time.___________

The resulting solution is tested using a litmus paper.

What is the result?

__ Red  litmus  turns to Blue _________________________________________________________

Does magnesium react with water at ordinary temperature?

_______Yes, but the reaction is weak_________________________________________________

Name two other metals that react with water at elevated temperature to give off hydrogen.

________ Lithium and sodium _____________________________________________________
