PROBLEMS ON TURBOFAN
Problem #1
The following data is given for a single spool turbofan engine:

Flight speed = 660 MPH

Ambient Conditions:
Pressure = 14.5 Psia
Temperature = 520oR

Core engine flow = 100 lbm/sec

By pass ratio = 1.5

Fan Data :
Diffuser efficiency = 0.97
Pressure ratio = 2.0
Fan efficiency = 0.9
Cold air nozzle efficiency = 0.99
Cold air nozzle is chocked and convergent.

Core Engine Data :

Diffuser efficiency = 0.985
Compressor pressure ratio = 6.5
Compressor efficiency = 0.86
Pressure loss in combustion
Chamber = 2.5%
Burner efficiency = 0.99
QR = 18500 B/lbm
To4 = 2200oR
Turbine efficiency = 0.9
Mechanical efficiency = 0.9
C-D nozzle is employed that is fully expanded with 1.5% stagnation pressure loss.

Other Data :
For cold air stream take γ = 1.4, R = 53.35 ft-lbf/lbmoR.
For hot air stream take γ = 1.3, R = 53.35 ft-lbf/lbmoR.
Find the following :
(a) Power of turbine and compressor.
(b) Power of fan.
(c) Thrust of the engine.
(d) TSFC.

Problem #2

Solve Problem # 1 while considering turbofan with aft-fan configuration with the following
additional data: For Primary Turbine read ηT = 0.9 and ηM = 100%, and for Secondary
Turbine read ηT = 0.88 and ηM = 100%.
Problem # 3

An aircraft powered by a front fan twin-spool turbofan engine is flying at 40000 feet with
Mach 0.85. For the following known data, calculate thrust and specific fuel consumption
of the engine:
Total mass flow rate 350 lbm/s
By pass ratio 2
Fan compression ratio 2.5
Fan efficiency 75%
Intake pressure recovery (Po2/Poa) 0.98
Compressor pressure ratio 12
10% air is bled from compressor for cooling when compression ratio is 4, and isentropic
efficiency is 90%.
Further 5% of the remaining air is bled out from compressor to avoid rear stages stall
when compression ratio is 8, and isentropic efficiency between two bleed points is 95%.
Overall isentropic efficiency of the compressor 80%
Turbine inlet temperature 2500 R
Mechanical efficiency of primary turbine 97%
Mechanical efficiency of secondary turbine 98%
Adiabatic efficiencies of both the turbines 95%
Stagnation pressure drop in combustion chamber 3%
Burner efficiency 100%
Heating value of the fuel 18500 B/lbm
Isentropic efficiency of hot nozzle 85%
Isentropic efficiency of cold nozzle 90%
Both the nozzles are convergent
Use γcold = 1.4, γhot = 1.3, and R=53.35 [ft-lbf/lbm R] for both the streams.

Problem # 4

An aircraft installed with turbofan engine (twin spool configuration) is flying at 25,000 ft at
Mach 0.8
The relevant engine data is as follows
Mass flow = 120 lbm /sec
c = 1.4

h = 1.3
Cp h = 0.297 BTU / lbm R Cp c = 0.24 BTU / lbm R
TO4 = 2500 R
By Pass Ratio = 2
QR = 18500 BTU/lbm

Efficiencies
Diffuser = 0.85 Fan = 0.9 Compressor = 0.8
Nozzle (hot) = 0.85 Nozzle (cold) = 0.8 Turbine (HP) = 0.9
Turbine (LP) = 0.9 Burner = 0.9 Mechanical = 0.9

Stagnation Pressure Ratios

Fan = 1.8 Compressor = 6.5 Combustion Chamber = 0.975

Problem # 5

If by pass ratio of the engine of Problem# 3 is 8:1, and hot nozzle (with no A/B) is fully
expanded but not chocked, then for mixed flow:

(a) Calculate TSFC for choked nozzle conditions (Two Nozzles)

(b) Calculate TSFC for fully expanded nozzle conditions (Two Nozzles)
