LESSON13)KNOWING

(To be done in copy)

A.Answer the following questions.

1) Define environment and its components.

Ans) Environment-Anything that surrounds us is known as environment.
It has two components- Abiotic and biotic .
Abiotic – It consists of non-living things- air water ,land and climatic
factors. These components influence the nature , behaviour and
distribution of living organisms.
Biotic- It comprises of living things like plants, animals and microbes
2) Write short notes on the following:
a) Biotic environment- It includes living things like plants, animals and
microbes. They can be broadly divided into three categories –
producers , consumers and decomposers.
b) Consumers- The organisms that eat the food prepared by the
producers are called consumers. They are also known as heterotrophs .
all animals including human beings fall in this category. They can be
divided into three categories depending on the food they eat-
herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
c) Producers- The organisms that can prepare their own food are called
producers. They are also known as autotrophs. Green plants can
prepare their own food through photosynthesis.
d) Abiotic environment- It consists of non-living things- air water ,land
and climatic factors. These components influence the nature ,
behaviour and distribution of living organisms.
3) What are decomposers and scavengers? Give examples of each.
Ans) Decomposers are organisms that reduce dead plants and animals to
simple substances and thereby return the constituents back to soil.
Example- bacteria and fungi
Scavengers are animals that feed on dead plants and animals. They help
in cleaning of environment. Example- jackal, vulture and hyena.
4) Explain how abiotic and biotic components of the environment depend
on each other.

Ans)

Plants and animals depend upon air and water to survive. Plants prepare
food using water and air and are therefore called producers. Animals eat
these plants directly or indirectly. When plants and animals die ,
decomposers reduce their dead bodies into nutrients and return them back
to soil. Thus nutrients taken up by the biotic components from the abiotic
environment are returned back to the environment.
5) Briefly explain some of the human activities that have led to the
reduction in the quality of the environment.
Ans) Some of the activities are-
(i) Deforestation- Excessive cutting of the trees for building houses
and industries , agriculture has led to excessive felling of trees.
(ii) Industrialization- Industries give out chemical waste which harm
both soil and water.
(iii) Increasing number of vehicles- With increasing population,
vehicles have increased and this has led to air and sound pollution.
6) Write a short note on impact of pollution on human health.
Ans) Air pollution- It has led to asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and lung
cancer among people .
Water pollution- It causes cholera, dysentery and even mental disorder.
Noise pollution- It is responsible for permanent and temporary deafness,
lack in concentration.
Soil pollution- It reduces the fertility of soil.
7) What is conservation of the environment?
Ans) Protection of natural environment is known as conservation of the
environment.
To conserve it
i) Plant more and more trees,
ii) Reuse and recycle every material .
iii) Save water and electricity .
iv) Reduce use of chemical fertilizers.
v) Manage industrial waste sensibly.
