A. Main Competencies
1. Students are familiar with basic issues related to literature in general and
English literature in particular.
2. Students are familiar with characteristics of different types of English
literary works.
3. Students are well equipped with basic knowledge of English literary works
and their prominent figures in both British and American contexts.
4. Students have basic experiences in appreciating English literary works such
as prose, poetry, and drama.
B. Indicators of Competencies (Learning Outcomes)
1. Students can define literature and its relationship to literary studies.
2. Students can describe character and attribute o literary works
3. Students can mention functions of literature and literary works in society.
4. Student can describe type and characteristics of literary works in English
literature and they are can mention a brief overview of different types of
English literary works.
5. Student are able to describe the definition of prose and elements of English
prose
6. Student can explore general definition of poetry and content elements of poetry
7. Student can mention basic understanding of English Drama
8. Students can mention prominent figures of English literature in both British and
American contexts.
9. Students have basic of theory English literature, experiences in analyzing
literary works and making relevant responses to them in a critical way.
1. General Strategy
To follow this course successfully, students are required to do the following overall
strategy:
a. Listen
During the entire semester, students will be provided with certain audio files and
texts, which contain patterned conversations and semi-formulaic talks, for them to
listen to carefully and repeatedly in order to understand their meaning and their
context of use.
b. Practice
Once students are familiar with the meaning and context of use of the conversations
and talks, they will be asked to practice them with their fellow students to develop
mastery and confidence. If necessary, they may also improvise those conversations
and talks.
c. Record
After students develop their mastery of the conversations and talks and grow their
confidence through repeated practice with their fellow students, they are asked to
record their own conversations and talks and submit them to the teacher for feedback.
d. Improve
Finally, based on the teacher’s feedback or peer-assessment, students will have the
opportunities to improve their mastery and confidence levels.
3. Off-class activities
Off-class activities consist of structured activities and independent learning activities.
Structured activities include weekly assignments of analyzing literary works and
performance practice whose objectives are to strengthen skills that the students learn
in the classroom. Students are also encouraged to engage themselves in independent
learning activities of their choice, such as having casual English chats or
conversations with their fellow students, joining English clubs or meetings, watching
English movies, and listening to English audio recordings.
To maximize off-class activities for the benefits of student learning, students will be
assigned into small groups, and members of each group will be working
collaboratively throughout the semester.
D. Learning Materials
Classes are supposed to be taking place as scheduled. For emergency reasons, however, a
class might be cancelled with a prior notice. A makeup class will be arranged for a
cancelled one. Below are scheduled classes with their respective teaching materials for
the entire semester. Students will receive soft copies of teaching materials at

E. Assessment
To successfully pass this course, students should demonstrate their acquired skills for
every aspect of the assessment for the whole course, which includes the following
components:
Students’ accumulative points will constitute their final grade for the course with the
following grading system:
86-100 = A = 4
76-85 = B = 3
66-75 = C = 2
56-65 = D = 1 (fail)
0-55 = E = 0 (fail)
