DAM14203 – MATERIAL SCIENCES


TEST 1, Semester I, Session 2020/2021

Instructions: Answer all question, and it must be handwritten. Otherwise, zero (0) mark will
be given. Submit your answer by taking its photo properly, convert and combine into one (1) PDF
document. Remember to write your name, matric no and section on answer paper.

Time: 1 hour 15 minutes.

Question 1

(a) Sketch a unit cell of three crystal structures commonly found in metals and give examples of
two (2) crystalline metals in each of these structures. State the number of atoms contained in
the unit cell for each of the three types considered.
(6 marks)

(b) Construct the direction from the index direction given [𝐴 𝐵 𝐶 ].


Where the value of A, B and C are assigned according to your last three-digit university’s matrix number.
Matrix number 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
[ABC] 2 1 1̅ 2̅ 0 1 2 2̅ 1̅ 2
For example, if your matrix number is AA200045, then your last three-digit is 045. So, your direction index
integers are [ 2 0 1].

(c) Find the lattice plane for the diagram shown below:

(d) Platinum has the FCC crystal structure with atomic radius, R = 0.1387 nm. Assume the atoms
to be hard spheres and packed as close together as possible along the FCC unit cell cross-
section. Calculate the theoretical volume density, 𝜌𝑣 of Platinum in g/m3.
(Given: Atomic mass of Platinum (Pt) = 195.08 g/mol, and
Avogadro’s number = 6.023 × 1023 atoms/mol)

(a) Figure 1 a typical bicycle for racing purposes.


(i) Suggest the most suitable material for frame and fork of a bicycle by considering
lower bicycle weight. Explain on that selection material.
(4 marks)
(ii) Consider two (2) characteristics of structural materials for the bicycle as shown in
Figure 1.
(2 marks)

(b) Figure 2 shows the stress-strain curve for two materials obtained from the tensile test.
(i) Explain the characteristics for both materials compared to each other.
(3 marks)
(ii) Give reason to each of your answer.

(c) A 20 mm diameter, 350 mm long rod made of an Aluminum alloy 7075-T6 (use Figure 3 to
estimate properties) is used in aircraft.
(i) Determine the elongation in the rod if a load of 60 kN is applied. Find the percentage
of this elastic elongation.
(ii) Find the load that the rod yield. Calculate the maximum load that the bar can take
without fracture.
