MET 213E- FUNDAMENTALS OF MATERIALS SCIENCE
MIDTERM EXAMINATION Exam Duration : 100 min.
A. Answer following questions as True or False.
1. (T) (F) Materials with ionic bonding are characterized by bonds that are formed by sharing of valence
electrons among two or more atoms.
2. (T) (F) A direction and its multiple are identical.
3. (T) (F) [110] is a close-packed direction in BCC.
4. (T) (F) Surface defects include grain boundaries.
5. (T) (F) Small angle boundaries formed by edge dislocations are called twin boundaries.
6. (T) (F) The screw dislocation can be illustrated by slicing partway through a perfect crystal, spreading
the crystal apart, and partly filling the cut with an extra half plane of atoms.
7. (T) (F) Fick’s first law describes the dynamic, or non-steady state diffusion of atoms.
8. (T) (F) Generally more energy is required for a substitutional atom than for an interstitial atom.
9. (T) (F) The hardness test measures the resistance of a material to penetration and provides a measure
of the wear and abrasion resistance of the material.
10. (T) (F) The fatigue test provides information on the load-carrying ability of a material at high
temperatures.
