ASSIGNMENT-1
Monsoon 2020

Question 1
Consider a circuit that is a series connection of a resistor R=1•and an inductor L=1 H, with a voltage source
v(t)=Bu(t), and I0 amps is the initial current in the inductor. Find and solve the differential equation for
B=1 and B=2 for initial conditions I0=1 and I0=0, respectively. Under what conditions is the system linear
and time invariant?

Question 2
Step response of a discrete time LTI system is given by s[n] = ( 21 )n u[n] then impulse response of the system
will be?

Question 3
Consider a continuous time signal x(t) = 4rect( 2t−19 t−15
30 ) + 5rect(t) ∗ δ( 50 ) Value of x(t) at t=0 is ? rect(t)
−1 1
is a rectangular function where rect(t) = 1 for 2 ≤ t ≤ 2 , 0 otherwise

Question 4
R5
Consider the integral : −10
3tδ(t + 5) + 9δ(t) + t2 δ(2t + 6)dt. Find value of the integral?

Question 5
Let x[n] = h[n] = 3,4,2,1, y[n]=x[n-1] * h[n+4] The value of y[n] at n=0? The values of n for which y[n]
exists?

Question 6
For x(t) indicated in the figure test the following:
a)x(1 − t)[u(t + 1) − u(t − 2)]
b)x(1 − t)[u(t + 1) − u(2 − 3t)]

Question 7
(a) Consider an LTI system whose response to the signal x1(t) in Figure a. is the signal y1(t) illustrated in
Figure b. Determine and sketch carefully the response of the system to the input x2(t) depicted in Figure c.

(b) Determine and sketch the response of the system considered in part (a) to the input x3(t) shown in
Figure d.
(c) Suppose that a second LTI system has the following output y(t) when the input is the unit step x(t)
= u(t):
y(t) = e−t u(t) + u(−1 − t)

2
Determine and sketch the response of this system to the input x(t) shown in Figure (e).

Question 8
Consider current flowing through the capacitor ic (t) and voltage across capacitor vc (t). if input is ic (t) and
output is vc (t). Check for Linearity, Time Invariance and Stability?

Question 9
The difference equation representation of a system is y[n] − 2y[n − 1] + y[n − 2] = x[n] − x[n − 1]. If y[n] =
0 for n < 0 and x[n] = δ[n] then y[2] will be?

Question 10
(a) Using convolution, determine and sketch the responses of a linear, time-invariant system with impulse
−t
response h(t) = e 2 u(t) to each of the two inputs x1 (t), x2 (t) shown in Figures 1 and 2. Use y1 (t) to denote
the response to x1 (t) and use y2 (t) to denote the response to x2 (t).

(b) x2 (t) can be expressed in terms of x,(t) as x2 (t) = 2[x1 (t) − x1 (t − 3)] By taking advantage of the
linearity and time-invariance properties, determine how y2 (t) can be expressed in terms of y1 (t). Verify your
expression by evaluating it with y1 (t) obtained in part (a) and comparing it with y2 (t) obtained in part (a).
