Primary and Secondary Research
Primary and Secondary Research
Primary and Secondary Research
Directions: Get onto our Zoom/Google meets live lesson to learn about the types of research
we want you to focus on at the start of our unit two film & website project. See rubric before your
submit.
What are you doing? You will plan out some primary research ideas and reflect on at least one
secondary resource.
Why are you doing it? To gather information to share on your website (later on) as well as share
in your film.
I. Primary vs. Secondary Research:
After attending our live lesson, how would you define primary vs. secondary research:
What did we emphasize as being very crucial with your secondary research??
Secondary research must be local. Also we need to make sure it's a reliable source when we
search the web for any data, or information.
1. Plan on/list/quick-write some primary research you can and need to do for your
topic. Be specific and think about how you can create these primary research
opportunities. Consider our teaching model as well from the live session.
Interviews: We plan to interview a few staff members at Voces , and a few volunteers. We
would like to get to know more about people, and why they decided to join Voces. We would like
to make a survey to compare our secondary research and primary research. See similarities
and differences. Volunteers are important to interview because we want them to tell their story
and share their experiences.
Call their office, or email them to schedule a zoom interview.
Some questions we might ask are…
Primary & Secondary Research
Virtual Lesson Activity
Why did you join Voces?
How has this impacted you as an individual as well as other people’s lives?
Is diversity, equity and inclusion a core value in this orginization? Why? ( These are a few ideas
we have came up as a group, but we have a doc shared with eachother where we write down
questions we come up with, and we talk about them together , and agree which ones are the
best, and cover information the audience might want to know about.)
2. Get on the website and find one secondary research source. Record the link
below--ask yourself, is it local?? After you link the source, read it, and write a three
chunk/paragraph reflection below using the prompts. Once again, consider the teaching
model if needed.
Yes this source is local. Second Wave South Michigan news paper article covering racial equity
in Battle Creek.
Source Citation: Copy-Paste or Link it!
Paragraph #1: Background & Context--tell me what your source is and why you picked it.
Paragraph #2: Summarize & explain what you learned from the article specifically.
Paragraph #3: Reflections & Ideas--finally, what ideas do you have from this source? How could
this help your film or website?

When I searched Racial equity in Michigan I scrolled and read the title
“Movement has more than one meaning for racial equity and social justice” I
automatically clicked on it. The article includes Victoria Fox’s story and why
she fights for social justice. It takes us back to her teenage years and where
it all began. The article mentions the actions people have taken to spread
awareness about social injustice, and what certain orginizations like the BC
Collective, and individuals like Victoria Fox are doing to expand racial equity.
I learned a lot in this article. Firt off, Victoria Fox is a Co- Founder of BC
collective and owns her own dance studio named “Stuio- M” .The M stands
for movement. She also works with voces and worked at Harper Creek. She
wants to get the community involved by offering low to no costs dance
lessons. She’s also a co adviser for “People for Equity” at Lakeview. It
involves students from schools in Battle Creek. The mission of BC Collective
is to be inclusive of people of all backgrounds and political persuasions.
Students in Battle Creek have came up with projects such as a privilage walk
for “Black History Month” and many other events in the past to support

“Womens Month and Hispanic Heritage History Month.” Things like this have
brought many children and families closer together
I have so many ideas for our project. One of them being interviews. I think it’s
very important to give people the opportunity to make a difference by using
the power of their voice. Victoria Fox used to work at Harper Creek and is
still part of the Race Club at Harper. She works for Voces, and we got to
know about her and BC Collective last week on Saturaday. She is a very
outspoken person, and really works hard to make a difference in our
community. I believe she’s a perfect role model for many children and
families. We have sent her a text to interview her. We would like to get more
pictures of events( even though some are limited due to covid). Voces had
actually partnered with BC Collective to give out free Thanksgiving meals
and PPE packages last Saturday. This is the perfect example to show others
that anything can be accomplished when we work together as a community.
