1 Concept Review
f (x)g 0 (x)dx = f (x)g(x) − f 0 (x)g(x)dx
R R
1. Formula:
2. How to use the formula:
(a) Your focus should be on the simplification or easy Rsolving of the second part of the formula
wherein
R 0 you have to integrate f 0 (x)g(x)dx, So choose f (x)g 0 (x) which is easier to integrate than
f (x)g(x)
(b) eg. Incase of x ln xdx, you would be tempted Rto choose f (x) = x and g 0 (x) = ln(x) but this
R

would result in a complicated integral wherein ln(x) needs Rto be calculated Rwhere as if you
choose f (x) = ln(x) and g 0 (x) = x, you end with the integral f 0 (x)g(x)dx = x1 (x2 ) which is
much easier to solve
