The following questions should not be expected to show up on the actual exam, rather they are
indicative the types of questions you should, at a minimum, feel comfortable answering prior to
taking the exam. Anything that we covered in class and referred to in the topic sheet is still fair
game. Finishing these problems alone is not a good strategy for studying for the exam, but can be
helpful in indicating your level of preparation.

Problem 1

Determine the following limits:

3x2 +2 x2 2 −8t+15 1
(a) lim 2 (b) lim− (c) lim t (d) lim− e x
x→∞ 5x −3x+6 x→2 x−2 t→5 t−5 x→0

Problem 2

Find the slope of the tangent line to the curve y = f (x) = x2 + 2x at the point (−3, 3) using the
definition of the derivative.

Problem 3

Find the equation of the tangent line to the curve y = x2 − 3x − 5 at the point (−2, 5)

Problem 4

The equation of motion of a particle is given by the position function

s(t) = 10t5 − t4 + 4t + 11, where t represents time in seconds, and s is given in meters.

(a) Find the equations of the velocity and acceleration functions with respect to t

(b) What is the initial velocity?

(c) What is the acceleration when t = 1?

Problem 5

Problem 10

A balloon is rising at a constant speed of 1 m/s. A boy is cycling along a straight road at a speed
of 2 m/s. When he passes under the balloon it is 5 m above him. How fast is the distance between
the boy and the balloon increasing 3 seconds later?

Problem 11
