Prelim Assignment 1
◙ Basic information about the ship can be accessed in the ship’s particulars. Vessel details can be found
here and it is useful for the officers like for example the chief officer who will be assigned to do
calculations and computations for the ship’s trim and stability, the ship’s particulars will be used to give
the ship details and variables.
○ Ship Builder
◙ A bridge watchkeeper is also known as the officer on watch (OOW). While keeping a watch on the
bridge he is the representative of the ship’s master and has the total responsibility of safe and smooth
navigation of the ship.
Officer on Watch (OOW) is also in charge of the bridge team, which is there to support him in the
navigation process. He is also responsible to ensure that the ship complies with COLREGS and all the
orders of the master are followed with utmost safety under all conditions. The three main duties of an
officer on watch (OOW) can very broadly, for the sake of understanding only, can be classified under:
Navigation, Watch keeping, and GMDSS radio watch keeping.
3. Give at least 4 equipment on the bridge that can be used to take the vessel position at sea and
explain how to use it.
◙ Gyro Compass – the gyro compass is the ship’s compass that points to the earth’s true north. Modern
ships use a GPS system or other navigational aids feed data to the Gyrocompass for correcting the error.
An orthogonal triad of fiber optic design and also ring laser gyroscopes which apply the principles of
optical path difference to determine rate of rotation, instead of depending upon mechanical parts, may
help eliminate the flaws and detect true north.
◙ Magnetic Compass – the magnetic compass is the ship’s compass that points to the earth’s magnetic
north. Unlike the gyro compass, this doesn’t require electricity to function and can be used in case of
emergency with other navigational equipment. Pick up the compass and hold it flat in front of you. Be
sure that the direction of travel arrow points straight ahead. Then, rotate yourself, keeping an eye on
the magnetic needle. When the red end lines up exactly with the orienting arrow, stop.
◙ Radio detection and ranging (RADAR) - It works by sending out a radio signal. When the signal hits an
object, it gets reflected back to the radar, which can then calculate a rough estimate of the object. It
does so by detecting other ships and land obstacles, to give bearing and distance for collision avoidance
and navigation while on water.
◙ Electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) - An Electronic Chart Display and Information
System (ECDIS) is a geographic information system used for nautical navigation that complies with
International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations as an alternative to paper nautical charts. The
ECDIS also uses the data from the ship RADAR in order to project the ship on the ECDIS display monitor
so the ship can be tracked on the chart.
