Capacitor excited machines are made by four winding.

Two galvanically insulated windings on a rotor, with a diode in series.
The main power winding on the stator.
An Auxilliary winding permanently connected to a capacitor.

Load

Under load condition, in the main winding is circulating

a current which is inducing an induction field opposite to the cause that
originally “created” it (Lenz Law). If this current is rectified,
can sustain voltage excitation.

PF<1 PF1

The induced field is efficient only if there is a matching between

the physical position of the poles, and the electrical position of the
induced field. In other words, it can work only at p.f.1.
at different power factors, the induction reaction “moves” and the

Let’s image the absence of an auxiliary winding.

In order to get nominal voltage in no load condition,

a “trick” is used. To engineer an “artificial” load that can sustain
the induction reaction to keep the excitation.

To save space in the main winding slots, the aux is inserted 90

electrical degrees from the main. Current is then “shifted” 90 deg by the
use of a capacitor as a load. Capacitor is also a nearly pure kVAr load,
nearly no kW absorption from the engine.

WHAT TO DO, WHEN FOR ANY REASON SELF-EXCITATION IS LOST
If the generator does not self-excite, it should be excited by applying an alternating
voltage of around 50÷230V to the capacitor heads for an instant.
This operation can be carried out indifferently on either of the capacitors in two
capacitor generators.

Before any cleaning, lubrication or maintenance operation, ensure that the
generator is stationary and disconnected from the prime mover.

In case of storing, both packed and unpacked alternators shall be stored in a

cool and dry room, and shall never be exposed to bad weather.

IMPORTANT !!!
IN CASE THE ALTERNATOR HAS BEEN STORED FOR A LONG TIME AND IN ORDER TO
AVOID DAMAGES CAUSED BY HUMIDITY, WE SUGGEST THAT THE INSULATION
RESISTANCE OF ALL WINDINGS TO GROUND BE CHECKED INCLUDING THE ROTOR.
THE RESULTING DATA MUST BE HIGHER THAN 1 MΩ.
IF DATA ARE NOT HIGHER THAN SAID VALUE, BLOW WARM AIR OVER THE WINDINGS
TILL THE ABOVE MENTIONED VALUE IS OBTAINED.

The generator must be installed in an airy room. If there is not enough

air, a malfunction or an overheating may occur.

The alternator should be securely connected and perfectly aligned with the prime
mover, otherwise dangerous vibrations may occur.

The machine has been designed to ensure the rated output when it is
installed in rooms having a max temperature of 40°C and at an altitude not
exceeding 1000 meters; in case of different conditions, please make
reference to our commercial catalogue (brochure).

The generators must never and for no reason run with the terminal box
lid removed.

The degree of protection of the generator is IP21; therefore it is made

prohibition to use whichever type of hydro-cleaner and to spray liquids over
the parts containing electrical components.

Do not clean the inside electric components with compressed air, because
this may cause short-circuits or other anomalies.

Do not remove the labels for whatever reason; on the contrary, replace
them in case of need.

In case of replacement of parts, use original spare parts only.

START UP
Make sure, when starting the machine, that cooling air intake and discharge openings
are free and unblocked.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPEED

Frequency and voltage depend directly on rotational speed. Its nominal value must
therefore be kept as constant as possible, no matter what the load is. Prime mover speed
control system generally has a small drop in speed between no-load and load conditions. It
is therefore recommended to adjust the speed in no-load conditions approx. 3÷4% higher
than the nominal speed, in order to have nominal RPM under full load conditions.

CHECKING VOLTAGE
All the machines are regulated during factory testing. If voltage readings differ from the
value indicated on the name plate, this may be caused by a wrong reading or by a different
rotational speed.

DIODE CHECK-UP
If the ohmmeter is used each diode has to give continuity
in only one direction. Otherwise, the test can be done with
a battery and a small lamp and by inverting the battery
polarity the lamp will light up in one direction only.
