Black Friday Project
Black Friday Project
Black Friday Project
First of all, the Romanians borrowed this day from the Americans as they also borrowed Valentine's
Day or Halloween. On this day, they open the shopping season for winter holidays, and retailers take
advantage of this to offer them discounts to their customers.
The name Black Friday originates in Philadelphia, from the English word "get in the black," meaning
you make a profit. On this day we offer low-priced products, more and more stores using this offer to
attract customers.
The Black Friday concept has begun to take shape only in 2011, although it has been in some form in
the US since the 1930s, being clearly defined a few decades later. In Romania, Black Friday is still in its
infancy.
The concept was first brought to our country three years ago in 2011 at the initiative of the eMAG
group, Flanco and Asesoft Distribution, with the intention of stimulating the electro-IT market in
particular. In 2011, eMAG and Flanco organizers also joined other participants, including: EvoMag,
PCGarage and Domo.
The first edition surpassed the expectations of traders, managing to generate behavioral changes among
Romanian consumers, who took advantage of discounts of up to 60% and switched their TVs, computers
or home appliances, although they may not have planned it . The products promoted by Black Friday
turned into the most bought products of the season, and the producers took the opportunity to launch
future bestseller products on the market.
According to a press release, eMag registered orders worth 12 million euros on the first day of Black
Friday, 50% more than the same day of the previous year. Including the weekend, the total amount of
orders reached 15.73 million euros. The stock for Black Friday, a total of 120,000 products in all
1
categories, was almost completely exhausted within the first four hours of the promotion. Flanco
announced that it had sales of about 12.1 million euros.
The first three places in Romanian preferences are: household appliances, the IT segment (laptops,
phones or tablets) and electronics (TVs, photo-video equipment).
Within the European Union, purchases are exempted from customs surcharges. However, bulky
packages can bring additional payments from the Romanian Post, even if they come from the European
Union.
In the case of acquisitions in the United States or other non-European states, things are different:
because of taxes, parcels are costing much more than the products themselves. Alternatives to be taken
into account are European representatives of sites such as Amazon or Ebay, for example. Instead, there
are some sources saying that the cuts were not as high as it is said that the price drop was artificial and
that the stock was limited.
In conclusion, after the presented ones, I can say that Black Friday in the online environment is
adapted to Romanian reality, because Romanians are able to buy discount products with the money they
keep for black days. In Romania, it is easy to get discounts because there are Romanian consumers who
have limited budgets and are looking for discounts.
