1. Can you relate Mike Boyle's views on employee motivation to the need theories
discussed in this class? If so, how?
2. How does expectancy theory explain Ana's view of her work at Mike Boyle's
Strength & Conditioning?
3. Marco speaks about the pride he takes in both his work and the gym. Describe
how his pride can be explained by any of the need perspectives on motivation.
4. How do Bob's ideas about training and learning relate to employee motivation?
1. Mike Boyle does have a point of constantly challenging his employees to be
better and helping his staff help achieve their goals. He wants to see his staff feel
motivated on their own, that way, he does not need to facilitate his staff to check
up on what they should be doing because the individual employee would do it on
their own accord, because they want to. He also brings up giving them the
chance to perform well. This could be a Need for Power, giving them a position
would satisfy their desires. It could also be a Human Relations approach where
the needs of these employees are more than just money and that fostering
favorable attitudes leads to motivation.
3. His point of view definitely makes sense that hiring the right people will work
themselves out because they would not be forced to do anything. I think with how
he sees things; he really wants to have people that are motivated on their own
accord. This is because things would be so much easier for him when the
employee is motivated on their own because he does not need to standby,
watch, and facilitate his staff to do better. Hiring the right people, people who are
motivated will indeed work itself out.
4. Bob highlights that he really loves what he does, this is what he is passionate
about. He sees education as an important factor in motivation. They ensure
morale stays up by educating their staff, sending them to take up seminars and
having staff meetings every week. They remain transparent with their staff and
keeping them informed with the latest updates. Therefore, he may believe in
Learning-Based Motivations. This could be Traditional, Contemporary, or Social
Learning because they do send people all over the country, to all these different
places to take up seminars and learn.
