PDHPE ASSESSMENT – RANIA SHEHRYAR

1. Hand in an annotated map of your local area → identifying the physical activity
facilities within 10-20 minutes walking distance of your house;

2. Explain three barriers that could affect an individual’s access to these facilities in
your local community;
There are many Barriers that could affect an individual access to the facilities in your area
but here are just three;
1. Public Transportation
2. Lack of Time
3. Covid-19

Public Transportation: Travelling to certain places can be particularly difficult if you do

not possess your own vehicle or are not instructed to drive. You would have to use public
transportation and hence, you may not be able to complete certain tasks, or you also may
not have enough time to take a bus or train to a gym or etc. But there are advantages of
using public transportation: Public transport is less expensive, it reduces pollution and
road congestion. However, in my opinion and more factually, private transport is more
preferred than public transport.

Lack of time: Not having enough time can be very pressuring when you need to get a lot
of things done, a way that you could help your time management with fitness is Monitor
your activities for one week and identify at least three, 30-minute slots you could use for
physical activity. Select activities that you can fit into your home or work routine so
you’re not wasting time on transportation to another venue to accomplish them. Walking

in your neighbourhood, climbing stairs at your office or exercising while you watch TV
are all good options.

Covid-19: Covid-19 has put many restrictions on our daily lives and has put barriers on
many places that we can go. Even with the virus slowed down, people still don’t want to
take the risk of being in such a confined space and limited ventilation where they are
highly vulnerable and can potentially further spread infections.

In conclusion, all these factors would come in as a barrier to any individual in order to
access facilities in their community.

3. Analyse the effectiveness of two facilities to enhance a lifetime of physical activity

for individuals.

The two facilities I have chosen are:

Female fitness gyms and Leisure Centres -

Female fitness gyms – Allows women to express and work harder.

Having gyms that accept both males and females to exercise, sometimes makes women
feel uncomfortable and then they don’t put in their full effort and therefore they can’t
achieve their full potential. This is why having fitness centres dedicated to women’s
fitness only can be extremely helpful and useful to women who are insecure or self-
conscious in front of other people, especially the opposite gender. For example, in my
local community we have; Female Fernwood Fitness, Body shape female fitness etc.

Leisure Centre – Allows all ages. Has activities for people who cannot do proper physical
activity (pregnancy, disability etc.)
Blacktown Leisure Centre is another immensely beneficial centre for a lifetime of fitness
because it allows all ages to do more than just one activity. Having gym open for all ages
improves strength, flexibility and proper posture in older adults. It benefits mental health
by boosting mood and self-confidence. Gym exercises improve quality of sleep and you
wake up feeling more energetic and refreshed. Gym exercises may contribute to longevity.
This helps in every age, obviously you should not go overboard but many gyms refrain
people older and younger than a certain age. The centre also has allocated activities for
particular people – e.g. people who are disabled can’t perform the way they would if they
weren’t disabled, to help them, the centre has made activities designed especially for them
and so they can feel good.
