First Semester 2014-2015
TEST – II (Open Book)
Course No: CE G617
Course Name: Advanced Structural Analysis Date: 31/10/2014
Duration: 60 min (09:30 to 10:30AM) Maximum Marks: 30

Instructions: Answer all the questions. IS codes are allowed.

1) Use the Direct Stiffness Method to analyze the structure with L-Shaped Bracket shown in
Figure . E is uniform, and the relative values of I are shown in Figure . Neglect all axial
deformations, i.e., assume that all members are axially inextensible. What are the unknown
nodal displacements for this problem? Set up the stiffness equations {P} = [K] {Δ} for these
free degrees of freedom but do NOT solve these for the displacements. Also frame the load vector
corresponding to the given loading. Given L = 4m, P = 20kN. (14M)

2) Consider the frame shown in the figure below. The frame is fixed at nodes 1 and 3, and is
subjected to a load of 22 kN applied at node 2. Assume I = 16.6 x 10 -5 m4, J = 4.6 x 10-5 m4, G =
84 GPa, and E = 210 GPa for all elements. Analyze the frame. (Hint: Consider the stiffness
values corresponding to unknown joint and proceed by framing the global stiffness matrix
accordingly). (16M)
