4 CO2 Full Marks 45
Time 90 mins
i) Answer ALL questions
ii). Write down the answers on hardcopies, take pictures of (or scan) them, and then
insert them in the appropriate positions under each question. Finally upload the whole
Instruction file (in a single DOC format/ PDF format) in the Google Classroom folder where Mid
s Exam questions are uploaded as an Assignment.
ii) It’s NOT an Open Book Exam.

Q1. [CO1]
[8+7]
a) Briefly describe the working principal of the following transformers. (L2)

Fig. 1 Fig. 2
b) Explain the working principle of the following instrument. (L2)

Fig. 3
Q2. [CO2]
[8+7]
a) A capacitive transducer is made up of two concentric cylindrical electrodes. The outer
diameter of the inner cylindrical electrode is 6mm and the dielectric medium is air. The inner
diameter of the outer electrode is 6.2mm. (L4)
Calculate the necessary voltage applied across the electrodes when dielectric stress is 4Kv/mm.
Is it within safe limits? The length of electrodes is 15 mm.
Calculate the change in capacitance if the inner electrode is moved through a distance of 4 mm.
The breakdown length of air is 4 kV/mm.

b) A steel cantilever is 0·25 mm long, 20 mm wide and 4 mm thick. (L4)

(a) Calculate the applied force at the free end when the value of deflection is 8mm at this end.
The modulus of elasticity for steel is 200 GN/m 2
An LVDT with a sensitivity of 0·45 V/mm is used. The voltage is read on a 15 V voltmeter
having 100 divisions. One fifths of a division can be read with certainty.
(b) Calculate the minimum and maximum value of force that can be measured with this
arrangement.
Q3. [CO2]
[4+8+3]
a) Compare the working principal of the following transducers. (L4)

Fig. 4 Fig. 5
b) A compressive force is applied to a structural member. The strain is 5 micro-strain. Two
separate strain gauges are attached to the structural member, one is a nickel wire strain gauge
having a gauge factor of 8 and the other is nichrome wire strain gauge having a gauge factor of
-8.2, (L4)
Calculate the value of resistance of the strain gauges before they are strained. The resistance of
strain gauges after being strained is 500mΩ.
Compare the resistance change produced by a strain of I50 macrostrain if a Strain gauge of
nominal resistance of 120Ω is used when made of wire resistance having a gauge factor of 200.
c) A thermistor has a resistance of 10KΩ. The resistance temperature coefficient is -0.05/°C. A
Wien's bridge oscillator is used two identical thermistors in the frequency determining part of the
bridge. The value of capacitance used in the bridge is 500 pF. Calculate the value of frequency
of oscillations for 30°C. (L4)
